SUMMARY:Adelaide - Digital Assets in the Built Environment: From Strategy to Operational Intelligence
DESCRIPTION:Digital assets are not handover deliverables; they are information capabilities that must be designed from the outset. This presentation from Rebecca De Cicco FCIOB\, Director of Built Digital SA\, and Founder & Global Chair of Women in BIM examines how an intelligent asset owner can set a digital and information strategy early\, align requirements with ISO 19650\, and translate them into procurement and contracts so appointed parties clearly understand their obligations. It explores how compliance can be monitored throughout design and delivery using information requirements\, responsibility matrices\, common data environments\, assurance gates and measurable acceptance criteria. Finally\, it considers the operational capability required to keep asset information current after handover – including governance\, competent people\, defined update processes and connected digital systems. The objective is a trusted\, maintainable digital asset that supports safer decisions\, better maintenance\, performance and long-term value. \nClick here to register\n  \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Rebecca De Cicco FCIOB is a Digital Transformation Specialist with more than two decades of international experience across BIM\, Digital Engineering and Information Management. SUMMARY:Melbourne - If Your Asset Data Gets Worse Over Time\, You're Doing It Wrong
DESCRIPTION:Most organisations plan a major asset data capture every five to seven years. The exercise is expensive\, disruptive and\, on the day it lands\, accurate. From that day forward it decays. Assets get replaced and nobody records it. Condition ratings age. Work orders get raised against plant that no longer exists. \nWe have treated this as the natural order. It isn’t. It is the predictable result of treating capture as an event rather than a practice\, and of building a business case around a single point in time. \nTwo things have changed. Capture technology is now accessible enough that in-house teams\, contractors and maintenance staff can correct and extend the record as they work\, instead of waiting for the next big project. And asset management and maintenance platforms now integrate well enough that every inspection\, repair and replacement feeds back into the asset record and lifts the fidelity of what you know. \nAsset data should start from a solid foundation and get better\, not worse. \nThis session\, presented by Trent Taylor\, the Managing Director of Kairos Strategies\, covers what actually degrades between capture cycles and why\, what a maintain-in-between model looks like in practice\, how feedback loops between systems change the quality of asset intelligence\, and what it means for how you fund and scope your next capture exercise. \nClick here to register\n  \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Trent Taylor is the managing director of Kairos Strategies\, Australia’s asset data capture specialists. He founded the company in 2016 after more than a decade in property and mechanical services\, and holds a Bachelor of Commerce and a Certificate III in Mechanical Engineering. That mix is deliberate: he understands how assets interact\, why they fail\, and what that does to a capital plan. Every Kairos auditor comes from a trade background. The team has verified millions of assets across health\, aged care\, local government\, retail\, commercial property and justice portfolios. Trent also leads Audify\, the field capture and lifecycle planning platform Kairos built for its own auditors and now runs on every engagement.

SUMMARY:Napier - AM Governance\, Leadership and Decision Making
DESCRIPTION:Join us in Napier for our upcoming NZ Technical Session: AM Governance\, Leadership and Decision Making. This session will bring together asset management practitioners from local government\, utilities and ports to share practical insights into how governance\, leadership and effective decision-making support stronger asset management outcomes. \nClick here to register\n  \nPresentations\nInvesting in the Right Asset at the Right Time: Why Good Plans Don’t Always Become Good Decisions\nInfrastructure asset management has long promoted the principle of investing in the right asset at the right time. Organisations invest heavily in asset information\, lifecycle modelling\, risk assessment\, and long-term planning to support evidence-based decision-making. Yet despite these advances\, infrastructure investment decisions frequently diverge from what asset management best practice would recommend. \nDrawing on research undertaken as part of a recently completed Master’s at the University of Auckland\, this presentation explores why the gap between planning and delivery persists. Through interviews with infrastructure leaders and practitioners across New Zealand\, the research examined how investment recommendations are reshaped as they move through governance\, funding\, political\, and organisational decision-making processes. \nThe findings suggest that investment outcomes are rarely determined by technical evidence alone. Financial constraints\, governance arrangements\, accountability structures\, risk appetite\, organisational capability\, political influences\, and community expectations all interact to influence when\, why\, and whether investments proceed. The research introduces a practical decision-making framework that helps explain where lifecycle-based recommendations are most commonly deferred\, reprioritised\, or overridden. \nFor asset managers\, executives\, and elected members\, the implications are significant. Improving infrastructure outcomes requires more than better data and sharper business cases. It requires decision-making systems that create visibility of trade-offs\, strengthen accountability\, and maintain alignment between asset management intent and investment outcomes. \nThe presentation introduces a practical framework for understanding these influences and discusses actions organisations can take to improve transparency\, accountability\, and alignment between long-term asset value and investment outcomes. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Darren de Klerk is Deputy GM and Director Infrastructure Delivery at Hastings District Council\, where he leads the delivery of major transport\, waters\, resilience\, and community infrastructure programmes. With more than two decades of experience across local government\, consulting\, and infrastructure delivery\, Darren specialises in programme leadership\, governance\, asset management\, procurement\, and capital investment decision-making. Always keen to learn and challenge himself. Darren recently completed a Master of Engineering at the University of Auckland\, researching how public asset-intensive organisations can improve infrastructure investment outcomes through better decision-making. His thesis\, Investing in the Right Asset at the Right Time\, explores why investment decisions often diverge from lifecycle-based asset management principles and identifies practical ways to improve transparency\, accountability\, and long-term value. Passionate about bridging the gap between strategy and delivery\, Darren is a strong advocate for evidence-based infrastructure planning\, continuous improvement\, and building organisational capability to achieve better outcomes for communities. Outside of his council role\, Darren serves on the Board of Āpōpō and is committed to advancing infrastructure asset management practice across New Zealand and the wider public sector.\n \n \n \nUnison’s Asset Management journey: then nexus of process\, data\, technology and amazing people\nData is a critical enabler of effective asset management\, providing the evidence needed to make informed\, transparent and value-focused decisions across the asset lifecycle. This presentation shares Unison’s experience of developing\, achieving and maintaining an ISO 55001-certified Asset Management System\, including how our approach has evolved\, where our asset management capability stands today\, and the direction of the next stage of our journey. It explores how disciplined processes are brought to life by capable and committed people\, supported by trusted data and fit-for-purpose technology. The presentation also considers the importance of giving people clarity about their own development and future opportunities within the organisation and the wider asset management profession. Unison’s experience demonstrates that sustainable asset management maturity is not achieved through certification\, process or technology alone; it depends on aligning people\, information and ways of working around a shared commitment to delivering long-term value from assets. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Gagan Chadha joined Unison in 2007 as a graduate engineer after completing a Bachelor of Electrical and Electronics Engineering and has since built an extensive career across network planning\, operations\, and asset management. During his time at Unison\, Gagan has played a key role in the development and implementation of the company’s Smart Networks programme and has led both the Long-Term Planning and Network Operations teams. Appointed General Manager Networks & Operations in 2023\, he is responsible for delivering safe\, reliable\, resilient\, and cost-effective electricity distribution services to customers across Unison’s network.\n \n \n \nWe hope you can join us for an informative afternoon of practical discussion\, shared experience and networking with New Zealand’s asset management community.

SUMMARY:Melbourne - Attesting Across The Seams
DESCRIPTION:A Victorian critical infrastructure entity can be answering to four legislative planks at once: the Asset Management Accountability Framework\, the Victorian Government Risk Management Framework\, Part 7A of the Emergency Management Act and the Commonwealth’s SOCI Act. Each is structurally sound on its own. None is required to agree with the others. State and federal regimes are changing at different rates\, they define asset\, risk and security differently\, and the same asset may be registered three times\, for insurable value\, state criticality and national significance\, in books that never reconcile. \nThis session argues that the material risk in a multiply regulated entity does not live inside any one regime. It lives in the seams between them: incompatible definitions\, uncoordinated reporting cycles\, and security attestations built on asset management foundations that are thin or untested. A director can sign off an all-hazards security program with no tested competence in the systems being guaranteed\, while the same gap in safety would breach WHS due diligence. \nDrawing on the paper Attesting Across the Seams and recent Australian failures such as Callide C and TT-Line\, the presentation sets out what asset managers can do now: build a single crosswalk from asset register to dependency map\, give the Audit and Risk Committee an express duty to own the seams\, and treat unreconciled registers and untested asset management maturity as key risk indicators rather than paperwork. \nClick here to register\n  \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Tony Ridley MSc CSyP FSyI SRMCP is Director and Principal Consultant at Ridstar Holdings and Chief Security and Risk Advisor at EMA Global. He has led enterprise risk\, security and resilience governance at executive level for more than 30 years\, most recently as de facto Chief Risk Officer at a state-owned critical infrastructure entity holding rail corridor land\, freight terminals and telecommunications infrastructure. There he owned CIRMP delivery for a regulated freight terminal under the SOCI Act\, led development of the TSRMP for the State’s rail telecommunications network\, oversaw the Part 7A resilience cycle\, and rewrote the enterprise risk framework on a converged State and Commonwealth baseline. His earlier career spans specialist service in the Australian Defence Force\, security operations across more than 40 countries\, Commonwealth EL2 operational risk leadership on a $40 billion federal scheme\, AML/CTF programme governance in retail banking\, and independent membership of a regional council Audit and Risk Committee. He has given expert evidence in international investment arbitration and in Supreme Court litigation on employer duty of care. Tony is a doctoral researcher on the integration of security\, risk and safety sciences with resilience and governance\, and the author of Attesting Across the Seams\, Appointed to Attest and The Moving Term\, the working papers this presentation draws on.
