SUMMARY:Melbourne - Opportunity as Risk Framework - a V/Line Presentation
DESCRIPTION:The concept of risk—including both opportunities and threats—sounds simple enough\, but many have attempted to tackle it with limited success. Is opportunity the opposite of risk\, or is it something else entirely? How can we quantify and manage opportunities in the same way we quantify and manage risks? \nAt V/Line\, Fiona Beckley\, Asset Information Specialist\, has been exploring these questions (and more) while developing an Opportunity Framework. This presentation shares that journey\, the quandaries this concept presents\, and the current state of the solution being developed. \nClick here to register \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Fiona Beckley has been working in Asset Mangement for over 20 years\, in rail\, water and manufacturing. Currently the Asset Information Specialist at V/Line\, Fiona supports the Information and Data component of the Asset Management system\, which includes the development of a controlled business mapping and diagramming (i.e. “Visualising V/Line) system\, developing and rolling out the Asset Information Strategy\, and designing an Opportunities On A Page solution.

Andy Hagan will set out: \n\nWhy lifting AM maturity is the fastest path to productivity gains – and how New Zealand currently ranks fourth-to-last in the OECD.\nThe NIP’s three practical levers for closing the gap – planning\, funding stability and assurance.\nWhat all this means for asset owners\, AM practitioners and the 40 % of the infrastructure workforce already dedicated to operations and maintenance.\n\nDelegates will leave with a clear view of where the NIP lands\, what will change in their day-to-day practice\, and where their expertise is critical to success. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Andy Hagan is General Manager\, Investment at the New Zealand Infrastructure Commission\, Te Waihanga. In this role he is responsible for the Commission’s work across the investment management lifecycle from infrastructure investment planning to delivery to asset management. Prior to working at the Commission\, Andy spent almost 20 years at the New Zealand Treasury in a range of roles spanning financial markets\, infrastructure and commercial issues\, including as a member of the Treasury’s Executive Leadership Team. He has also consulted to a range of clients\, primarily focussing on infrastructure funding and financing. Andy has a Master of Business from the University of Otago and was awarded the New Zealand Public Service Medal for outstanding public service in 2022.\n \n \n \n  \n\n  \nAdvanced corrosion modelling for lifetime extension of overhead power transmission lines \nTranspower’s Transmission lines span over 12\,000 kilometres across New Zealand. The lines traverse through varying terrain such as the benign Central Otago region right through to extreme salt spray and corrosion areas such as Tiwai and Oteranga Bay. The terrain makes corrosion highly localised with salt transport coming many kilometres inland due to wind funnelling. With an aging fleet\, the forecasted reconductoring spend over the next 15 years was increasing from $50M to $250M per year. \nHistorically the conductor health model forecasting replacements used age and an expected life using conductor type\, location and where it was known that the conductor was not fully greased (grease holidays). This would be manually adjusted for observed condition and eddy current “Cormon” testing that detects the zinc galvanising loss on the steel core strands. While these methods are relatively advanced by international standards\, they have remained inherently conservative. Transpower needed a model that could confidently and safely extend the forecasted replacement life. \nDrone condition assessment and the defect model has provided Transpower with the ability to manage the risk and flatten the reconductoring curve. It allows for a manageable ramp up in heavy wiring crew resources\, reduces revenue price shocks and buys time to align replacements with tactical upgrades to incorporate new power demand. \nThe defect model uses drone visual data being acquired alongside accelerated corrosion testing\, and destructive testing. Corrosion of the aluminium strands in Aluminium Clad Steel Reinforced (ACSR) creates a white corrosion product that fills the void spaces between strands and creates bulges. The model can assess if the conductor is safe to maintain in service and predict when it will become unsafe. The model uses Finite Element sub-modelling of bulges\, and a power line design global modelling program (PLS-CADD) for defined weather cases and risk profiles. The challenges include automated image processing\, storage and retrieval of drone data. Defects are classified as broken strands\, white powder\, bulging\, strands out of lay\, spacer damage\, copper corrosion etc\, with the white power bulges in ACSR cables being processed further by the defect model. The model includes modelling the increases in temperature at bulges due to loss of aluminium cross-sectional area\, and the decrease in yield stress and ultimate tensile stress. \nThe defect growth rate has been estimated to forecast replacement in the longer term. The model was calibrated using destructive testing of ex-service samples and accelerated corrosion/salt spray cabinet samples. Corrosion maps based on historical changes in condition assessment data\, and a NZ industry standard based on atmospheric corrosion of coupons\, are used to estimate the defect growth rates. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Kevin Stevens has worked as a Performance Engineer/Asset Modeller at Transpower NZ Ltd since May 2020. Prior to that he was a Senior Consultant in the petrochemical and energy sectors at MPT Solutions/Quest Integrity Group\, 2010 to 2019. MPT was a spinoff company from the metallurgy and corrosion teams within Industrial Research Ltd (a New Zealand Crown Research Institute)\, where Kevin worked as a senior scientist from 1993 to 2010. Kevin undertook his academic training with a BSc(Hons) and PhD at Victoria University of Wellington\, from 1986 to 1993.\n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Cijina Lazo-Ron is an experienced engineer that started her career in Network Planning of the Distribution grid in South Africa in 2009. Since then\, she has spent time undertaking overhead line designs\, before moving to New Zealand. Since 2017\, Cijina has been with Transpower’s Asset Planning team\, having led many of the Transmission lines portfolios. Cijina currently heads up the Asset Planning Transmission Lines team\, with a focus on strategic planning and portfolio improvements to improve asset health. Cijina career to date is marked by a passion for driving innovation into the energy sector.\n \n \n \n  \n\n\n  \nInnovating back to the future \n\n\nIn infrastructure landscape\, innovation is often heralded as the catalyst for transformation. Yet\, as we embrace new technologies\, methodologies\, and paradigms\, a paradox emerges: the more we change\, the more it stays the same. This discussion explores how innovation—while reshaping tools\, processes\, and expectations—often reinforces the enduring principles of aligning or adopting standards\, disciplined delivery and good governance. \nLooking at AT asset management we’ll examine how digital twins\, automated and rapid data collection predictive analytics have improved delivery. However\, these innovations consistently circle back to foundational principles \nIn particular\, we reflect on the growing expectation of artificial intelligence as a perceived panacea. While AI offers powerful tools for forecasting and optimisation\, there are few magic solutions. Advocates of AI as the ultimate saviour should heed the old statistical warning: “lies\, damned lies\, and statistics.”\, we could about to embark on data\, damned data and AI. Without context\, oversight\, and critical thinking\, even the most advanced models risk reinforcing bias or obscuring nuance. \nThis discussion challenges attendees to rethink innovation not as disruption\, but as evolution—a means of refining what already works or what could work better to answer old and new problem. It highlights how embracing change can deepen our commitment to enduring principles\, ensuring that while our methods evolve\, our mission remains constant. \n  \n\n  \nCity Rail Link – The Rail Assets journey from requirements through to entering service \nThe City Rail Link (CRL) represents a transformative leap in Auckland’s transport infrastructure\, with its rail assets forming the backbone of a modern\, high-capacity urban transit system. \nThis presentation traces the journey of the CRL’s rail assets —from the initial articulation of stakeholder and operational requirements\, through detailed design and construction installation and inspections\, to the rigorous assurance processes of dynamic train testing\, prior to the rail assets being accepted into KiwiRail’s network for operational service.\n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Bevan Assink is KiwiRail’s Programme Director leading KiwiRail’s engagement in New Zealand’s largest infrastructure initiative. With a strategic and operational remit. Bevan oversees KiwiRail’s interface with the CRL project\, including KiwiRail’s capital delivery programme to upgrade specific Auckland Metro stations as part of CRL readiness\, and leads the internal integration workstream to inform and prepare KiwiRail’s Infrastructure business units for the adoption of new CRL assets and operating models. His leadership ensures KiwiRail’s contributions to system integration\, operational readiness\, stakeholder engagement\, and regulatory safety case development are aligned with the successful incorporation of CRL into the Auckland Metro Rail Network.\n \n \n \n  \n\n  \nSweating the Data Assets \nAsset management maturity is sometimes seen as a proxy for asset management performance. The typical asset management maturity assessment seeks detailed evidence on how the organisation plans to achieve its asset management objectives and how those plans are being implemented by teams every day. A corresponding diagnostic on how well the asset management system is performing in terms of risk\, cost and performance outcomes is usually missing. \nThis presentation will discuss case studies that apply quantitative analysis of data that are often available but buried in asset management information systems\, to provide deeper\, more actionable insights\, including early warning indicators not visible in high-level reports. \n  \n\n  \nSmart Seeds: Empowering Emerging Leaders Through Innovation \nSmart Seeds is a design-led innovation program that empowers emerging leaders to find solutions to complex challenges. Participants build critical innovation skills and valuable networks while collaborating in multi-organisational teams. \nThis high energy presentation will show you a different approach to learning through a hands-on collaboration beyond traditional online courses focused on addressing challenges impacting your clients and community. \nEmerging Leaders from social agencies government\, consultants\, contractors are brought together to collaborate towards resolving complex issues facing our communities empowering them to innovate\, advocate and influence change.\nThe presentation will describe the journey and share some amazing stories from our Emerging Leaders. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Maurice is passionate about people\, experience\, leadership\, and achieving outcomes for communities in energy\, water\, transport\, buildings and environment. Maurice is a Principal at GHD with oversight of NZ Pacific strategy\, markets and regions. Blending strategy with a sense of purpose\, Maurice’s career is shaped by a quest to reshape industries and make the world a better place\, one sustainable decision at a time. He has spent 30 years on 3 continents in water\, energy\, and transportation as a policy advisor\, project manager\, technical director\, sustainability advocate\, innovation practitioner\, and now change leader. Achievements include the startup of a global digital business; guiding the transformation of an energy firm with a carbon footprint bigger than the UK’s; and getting Smarts Seeds off the ground in New Zealand – an innovation and leadership programme for emerging leaders in the infrastructure sector.\n \n \n \n  \n\n  \nClick here to register

Don’t miss this chance to stay at the forefront of asset management excellence right here in Perth. \nFeaturing: \n\nAchieving better outcomes through integrated performance risk and decision framework\, Ankur Maheshwari\, AMCL\nDigital Risk-Based Planning to Create Value at Infrastructure Portfolio Level\, Paul Davis / Shane Oldham\, BetterAIM\nRevolutionising the way complex systems are engineered and managed using a digital model\, Jim Stancombe\, I&E System\nIntroducing uncrewed aircraft to carry out effective BVLOS operations to deliver ‘Digital Visualisation’ outputs for ‘Linear Asset Inspections’ and ‘Right of Way Surveys’\, Anthony Roe\, Xplorate\n\nClick here to register\n\n\nAbout the Presentations and Speakers:\nAchieving better outcomes through integrated performance risk and decision framework – Ankur Maheshwari\, Technical Director Asia Pacific\, AMCL  \nOptimal asset management decisions hinge upon balancing asset performance and associated risks. Whilst the application of asset performance management and risk management for asset management is now evident in many utilities\, the maturity levels of application vary between organisations.  A key differentiating factor is the extent to which these approaches are integrated\, i.e. integration of asset performance management\, risk management and asset management decision-making.  This presentation would discuss an end-to-end asset management decision-making framework that integrates multiple complex business capabilities. It can be applied to all asset management decisions and has lays the foundation for future asset management improvements. \nUsing a case study\, the paper discusses how the new decision-making framework was tested to review an existing asset strategy concerning a key safety objective for a utility.  The application of this methodology identified existing business rules that should be selected for further review\, to drive improved performance.  As these frameworks are applied over the time\, they will enable improvements in efficiency and effectiveness from investments. \nThe presentation demonstrates the benefits of applying a structured approach and integrating performance and risk frameworks to drive transparent and informed asset management decisions.  It is expected to maximise value from investments and deliver optimal outcomes for stakeholders\, through improved asset management decision-making.\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Ankur Maheshwari is a highly experienced\, seasoned asset management professional with over three decades of experience in a wide range of techno-commercial aspects of asset management in the utility\, manufacturing and industrial sectors.  He is currently Technical Director Asia Pacific with AMCL Consulting. He has hands on experience in envisioning\, leading and implementing asset management improvements that improve organisations ability to extract most value from its assets.  He is AMCL’s global lead for risk management service line.  He has experience in designing and implementing asset management decision making frameworks including performance and risk management frameworks for organisations of various size and a wide variety of assets including power\, water\, rail\, facilities and defence assets.  Ankur has been actively involved in the revision of the Asset Management Landscape published by GFMAM.  Ankur’s commitment and dedication to the field is evident in his active involvement in Asset Management Council for many years.\n \n \n \n\n\nDigital Risk-Based Planning to Create Value at Infrastructure Portfolio Level – Paul Davis\, Technical Director Asset Management\, BetterAIM \nWhile ISO 5500X promotes risk consideration in asset management\, in reality\, it is often not considered implicitly to inform operation\, maintenance and asset renewals. In a resource-constrained environment where renewals backlogs can be high\, opportunities to ‘sweat’ infrastructure\, defer capital while understanding and managing risk to community can be lost. \nThis presentation outlines the implementation of a portfolio-wide\, digital asset management planning tool covering infrastructure that provides diverse services and value to the community. Following a pilot presented at AMPEAK24\, the digital planning tool has been expanded to understand asset risk in a consistent\, repeatable manner across: \n\nWater Networks\, Treatment and Recycling facilities\nMunicipal Waste Facilities\nBuildings\nRoads\nStormwater\n\nThe portfolio tool is interactive\, transparent allowing the user to understand and communicate: \n\nPortfolio quantities – What assets do we own? Where are they? When were they installed? How much would it cost to replace them?\nAsset health across the network – What condition are our assets in? What is their probability of failure?\nAsset criticality – which asset classes in the portfolio impact our business and community the most and why?\nAsset risk – where is the risk across the portfolio\, and how large is it?\nRisk mitigation – Can we mitigate the risk with the budget we can access?\nInvestment planning – What are we doing\, and where are we doing it? When?\nBusiness approvals – Can activities be aligned with other project drivers? Can we demonstrate prudency and efficiency?\n\nAsset criticality across the portfolio was workshopped with key stakeholders in the organisation to identify the required operational response to asset failure and its consequences. Regardless of asset class\, criticality was assigned in a manner consistent with the organisation’s enterprise risk framework\, allowing consistent consideration of service provision risk\, regardless of the asset class (e.g. water mains\, vs roads\, vs buildings). A Lifecycle Intervention model (LIM) was then developed to: \n\nForecast the portfolio’s future asset deterioration and risk levels over a 10-year planning period.\nAlign intervention methods (such as condition assessment\, functional testing\, maintenance inspections\, repair\, rehab\, and replacement) with the business risk appetite.\n\nOutputs from the LIM were visualised in a dashboard tool that is data-driven\, fully interactive\, and transparent. The innovative tool allows asset owners to effectively engage stakeholders\, communicating investment needs at all levels\, from board / executive to field crews and the community. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Paul is the Technical Director – Asset Management at BetterAIM. He has held previous roles in asset intensive organisations\, leading asset performance monitoring\, maintenance delivery\, and asset design teams. Over the years\, he has seen far too many written asset management plans gathering dust on the shelf\, rather than being used to support effective decision making. His passion is to improve engagement and asset management collaboration across organisations through digital tools.\n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n After 13 years in the British Navy\, predominantly in the Operations and Maintenance Management disciplines\, Shane moved with his wife and started a family in WA. Water Corporation gave him the opportunity to further his career in the Water Industry\, where he enjoyed challenging roles in Asset Renewals\, Maintenance\, Asset Information Management and Asset Management Strategy. After almost 25yrs as an Asset Management practitioner\, he took up the challenge of sharing his experience across other industries through BetterAIMs Advisory Services\, sharing practical learnings across common issues. \n \n \n \n  \n\n\nRevolutionising the way complex systems are engineered and managed using a digital model – Jim Stancombe\, Director of Relationships\, I&E Systems\nTo build and run efficient and productive operations you need to design\, construct and commission complex systems. These complex systems are jam packed with hardware and software that is interconnected. Every object has different functions\, different connections\, and different relationships. During the lifecycle the system needs maintenance and upgrades. A deep understanding of these systems is essential to the ability to control a project and asset. \nSurprisingly\, in or digitally advanced world\, teams of engineers still draw the designs for complex systems in a flat manner\, much like a picture. This approach creates thousands of individual drawings and documents produced by different teams working on the system\, all of which capture bits of information about it. If something is changed\, all the related documents must be found and updated. Using decentralised processes that depend on individual drawings and documents to manage complex systems is extremely inefficient. BIM does not account for complex systems. \nA digital model is a true representation of the complex system at any point in the lifecycle. It’s a real digital twin. It is a centralised database containing all current and historical hardware and software information about the system. It can be accessed simultaneously by engineers\, managers and other stakeholders from any location\, at any time. \nFrom fibre optic networks to electrical\, instrumentation\, and control systems; from communications and IT systems to security\, CCTV\, and building management systems\, this software solution can model any type of complex system. \nChange leaders are transforming the way they engineer and manage complex systems. Fortescue recently used a digital model to design\, construct and commission their complex systems on their $4bn Iron Bridge project without producing a traditional engineering drawing. Public Transport Authority of Western Australia (PTA) are currently using a digital model for their major Metronet program and have contractually mandated that service providers must handover a digital model at completion\, not thousands of engineering drawings and documents. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Jim Stancombe is based in Perth\, WA and is the Director of Relationships for I&E Systems. Jim is engaged in bringing about a revolution in the way complex systems are engineered and managed. This work is focused on embracing a digital model and eliminating decentralised processes that rely on drawings and documents. Jim worked at the National Australia Bank for 16 years where he held senior leadership roles in operations management\, risk\, and sales. Jim studied Economics at the University of Tasmania and received an MBA from Monash University. He is a certified black belt six sigma practitioner.\n \n \n \n\n\nIntroducing un-crewed aircraft to carry out effective BVLOS operations to deliver ‘Digital Visualisation’ outputs for ‘Linear Asset Inspections’ and ‘Right of Way Surveys’ – Anthony Roe\, Chief Growth Officer\, Explorate\nThis presentation will describe the benefits and challenges of using un-crewed aircraft to carry out Digital Visualisation ‘Asset Integrity Inspections’ and ‘Right of Way’ (ROW) Surveys over a linear distance of 540km using BVLOS (Beyond Visual Line of Site) techniques. \nTraditionally\, manned helicopters and fixed wing aircraft have been used to carry out the survey activities given the challenges of the long distances\, and the weight of payloads required to execute the surveys. \nThe presentation will describe the approach and technical challenges to carry out successful BVLOS Asset Operations using un-crewed aircraft across a 540km pipeline in Australia. \nThe presentation will share the outputs using AI Models (artificial intelligence) for the features extracted\, of both anomalies and points of interest and describe how the initial projects could be expanded into multi-modal\, single mission sorties over long distances. \nThe project was a ‘first of a kind’ successful milestone in the use of BVLOS\, long range\, high payload\, un-crewed helicopter systems. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Anthony Roe is an experienced practitioner in the introduction and operationalisation of Digital Asset Management. He specialises in the disciplines of industrial AI\, digital twins and the digitisation of business and operational process. Anthony has deep global experience in the sectors of Oil and Gas\, Mining\, and Utilities. He has a keen strategic focus on Environmental stewardship\, holds a BSc Degree in the Environment and is certified Petro-Chemical Mechanical and Production Engineer.\n \n \n \n\n\n\n\nClick here to register

It will examine how Sydney Metro has responded to legislative and standards changes over time\, and how these have been incorporated into more recent contracts. \nA high-level summary will outline how the initial approach to standards has shifted\, the drivers behind these changes\, and the implications for both new and existing contracts—particularly in the context of augmenting current Operations and Maintenance (O&M) phase contracts with additional requirements. The case of the Northwest project and the development of new standards will be discussed\, along with how Sydney Metro has built on this foundation to ensure future PPPs adhere to critical standards. \nA practical example will be shared on how changes to legislation—specifically around the Security of Critical Infrastructure (SOCI)—were implemented during the O&M phase\, illustrating the challenges of enacting legislative changes within PPP contracts and their asset management implications. \nThe session will conclude with an overview of Sydney Metro’s current approach to managing owned assets in this contractual environment\, identifying the key tasks considered critical to success\, the mechanisms used to provide assurance in contractor-delivered activities\, and how the relationship with the O&M contractor shapes Sydney Metro’s involvement and approach to managing disputes. \nClick here to register\n\n  \nAbout the Speaker:\nSean Caldwell\, Director Asset Management & Engineering\, Sydney Metro\nSean has worked in the Rail Industry for the last 24 years\, originally from the UK\, Sean trained as a Signalling Engineer and has spent his career working across the UK\, Australia and New Zealand within Signalling Testing and Commissioning. SUMMARY:Townsville - How complex systems fail: Lessons from Boeing’s 737 MAX 8 crashes
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special in-person meet-up in Townsville to view a live stream of the Brisbane Chapter technical event on “How How complex systems fail: Lessons from Boeings 737 MAX 8 crashes”. This is a fantastic opportunity for anyone in or near Townsville to gather\, network\, and learn together. The event is free to attend\, making it accessible for all interested in the topic. \nMany of us think in Newtonian terms\, meaning that when we examine systems\, we tend to think there is a direct link between cause and effect – everything that happens has a definite\, identifiable cause and a definite effect. And there is symmetry between cause and effect: the seriousness of the effect is related to the seriousness of the cause – big failures happen because of big causes\, and small failures because of small ones. \nBut intuitively we know this doesn’t hold up for certain\, so-called ‘complex’\, systems. Instead\, we can have sudden changes in these systems\, which often appear dramatic\, but which have tiny causes. How then should we think about failure or dramatic change in these types of systems? \nThis session explores this question by examining the organisational causes of the two Boeing 737 MAX crashes that resulted in the deaths of 346 people. \nThis session comprises a presentation delivered by Sean Brady (Managing Director and Forensic Engineer at Brady Heywood)\, followed by a facilitated Q&A. \n  \nClick here to register\n  \n  \nAbout the speaker:\n\nSean Brady is a forensic engineer who investigates engineering failures from a technical and organisational perspective. In 2020\, he completed the Brady Review\, an investigation into the causes of fatalities in the Queensland mining industry. The review was tabled in parliament and made 11 recommendations to the regulator and mining companies on how to improve safety. In 2024\, he completed the technical and organisational investigation into the catastrophic failure of a turbine generator at Callide C Power Station in Queensland\, Australia. He also speaks\, writes and podcasts on the causes of technical and organisational failure.

SUMMARY:Sydney - Asset Management Evolution in the Age of the Energy Transition
DESCRIPTION:The drive towards a sustainable future is reshaping the global landscape and has consequently moved to the forefront in the world of asset management. Since COP21 in 2015\, organisations and governments have began addressing the huge challenge of decarbonisation. Since infrastructure\, construction and operation constitutes 70% of global GHG emissions\, sustainable asset strategies are a key enabler of this global ambition. \nThe energy transition transcends the energy sector\, impacting organisations across the board. From utilities to transportation\, and from manufacturing to public services\, every asset portfolio is undergoing a pivotal change. Where once the triad of risk\, performance\, and cost dictated asset management\, we now witness an incremental fourth dimension – sustainability. \nAsset management principles are also evolving. The Institute of Asset Management’s Asset Anatomy’s fourth edition explicitly recognises the urgent need to embed ESG considerations\, carbon abatement\, and circular economy principles into asset management methodologies. This shift majorly attributes to the evolution of the 6-box capability model into a more holistic 10 Box perspective. \nThis presentation will unpack these changes and explore examples of asset portfolios around the world effectively applying these new and evolved capabilities\, by employing novel renewable solutions\, as they advance through the energy transition. \n  \nClick here to register\nThis is an in person event. \n  \n\nAbout the Speaker:\nEmily Mulcair\, Manager\, KPMG\nEmily is a Manager in KPMG’s Engineering and Asset Management team. Spending her early career in Ireland working on biomethane and hydrogen feasibility and detailed design projects\, Emily now consults on largescale energy system reviews\, maintaining a passion for the integration of renewable gas into the global energy mix in the transition to net zero.
