SUMMARY:Townsville - How complex systems fail: Lessons from Boeing’s 737 MAX 8 crashes
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special in-person meet-up in Townsville to view a live stream of the Brisbane Chapter technical event on “How How complex systems fail: Lessons from Boeings 737 MAX 8 crashes”. This is a fantastic opportunity for anyone in or near Townsville to gather\, network\, and learn together. The event is free to attend\, making it accessible for all interested in the topic. \nMany of us think in Newtonian terms\, meaning that when we examine systems\, we tend to think there is a direct link between cause and effect – everything that happens has a definite\, identifiable cause and a definite effect. And there is symmetry between cause and effect: the seriousness of the effect is related to the seriousness of the cause – big failures happen because of big causes\, and small failures because of small ones. \nBut intuitively we know this doesn’t hold up for certain\, so-called ‘complex’\, systems. Instead\, we can have sudden changes in these systems\, which often appear dramatic\, but which have tiny causes. How then should we think about failure or dramatic change in these types of systems? \nThis session explores this question by examining the organisational causes of the two Boeing 737 MAX crashes that resulted in the deaths of 346 people. \nThis session comprises a presentation delivered by Sean Brady (Managing Director and Forensic Engineer at Brady Heywood)\, followed by a facilitated Q&A. \n  \nClick here to register\n  \n  \nAbout the speaker:\n\nSean Brady is a forensic engineer who investigates engineering failures from a technical and organisational perspective. In 2020\, he completed the Brady Review\, an investigation into the causes of fatalities in the Queensland mining industry. The review was tabled in parliament and made 11 recommendations to the regulator and mining companies on how to improve safety. In 2024\, he completed the technical and organisational investigation into the catastrophic failure of a turbine generator at Callide C Power Station in Queensland\, Australia. He also speaks\, writes and podcasts on the causes of technical and organisational failure.

SUMMARY:Sydney - Asset Management Evolution in the Age of the Energy Transition
DESCRIPTION:The drive towards a sustainable future is reshaping the global landscape and has consequently moved to the forefront in the world of asset management. Since COP21 in 2015\, organisations and governments have began addressing the huge challenge of decarbonisation. Since infrastructure\, construction and operation constitutes 70% of global GHG emissions\, sustainable asset strategies are a key enabler of this global ambition. \nThe energy transition transcends the energy sector\, impacting organisations across the board. From utilities to transportation\, and from manufacturing to public services\, every asset portfolio is undergoing a pivotal change. Where once the triad of risk\, performance\, and cost dictated asset management\, we now witness an incremental fourth dimension – sustainability. \nAsset management principles are also evolving. The Institute of Asset Management’s Asset Anatomy’s fourth edition explicitly recognises the urgent need to embed ESG considerations\, carbon abatement\, and circular economy principles into asset management methodologies. This shift majorly attributes to the evolution of the 6-box capability model into a more holistic 10 Box perspective. \nThis presentation will unpack these changes and explore examples of asset portfolios around the world effectively applying these new and evolved capabilities\, by employing novel renewable solutions\, as they advance through the energy transition. \n  \nClick here to register\nThis is an in person event. \n  \n\nAbout the Speaker:\nEmily Mulcair\, Manager\, KPMG\nEmily is a Manager in KPMG’s Engineering and Asset Management team. In context this methodology draws on the Lean Manufacturing Principle of Single-Minute Exchange of Die (SMED) to optimize maintenance sequencing\, to dramatically reduce the time it takes to complete equipment changeover. The essence of SMED is to convert as many changeover steps as possible to “external” (performed while the equipment is running)\, and to simplify and streamline the remaining “internal” steps. Through the implementation of this method\, all machine component movements were clearly mapped and optimized to remove double handling or unnecessary lifts. The detailed understanding of component assembly and disassembly steps also enabled modification of the method to consider and execute contingency scenarios. In conclusions\, the use of such methods associated with Lean Manufacturing Principles\, are highly transferable to completion of major component maintenance and shutdown tasks\, driving continuous improvement in the performance of asset maintenance. \nNyssa MacManus\, CLB Maintenance Superintendent\, Maintenance Solutions\, Rio Tinto\nNyssa is an experienced asset management professional with a wide knowledge base in engineering\, maintenance execution\, and frontline leadership. She graduated with a double degree in Mechanical and Chemical Engineering in 2014 from Louisiana Tech University. \nHer career has stretched from the oil fields of Louisiana to the bauxite hills of Far North Queensland\, and the red dirt of Pilbara. While working fulltime she was able to complete her Master of Science in Engineering and Technology Management in 2021\, again from Louisiana Tech University. \nNyssa has had exposure to the ‘whole of life’ asset philosophy through her various roles in the industry\, which has allowed her to make improvements and decisions that are not only sustainable but focused on good asset stewardship with a people centric approach to providing practical engineering solutions. \n\nDigitally Enabled Asset Management Plans; A Practical Approach\nThe development of Digital Asset Management Plans provide dynamic visualisation of an organisation owns\, the current state and performance of their assets and the forecast investment required to meet the defined levels of service while managing risk and cost over the life of the asset. The paper sets out the “How to Guide” on designing\, developing\, and populating digital and digitally enabled Asset Management Plans. The presentation will be based on GHD’s experience in developing the Digital Asset Class Management Plans for Southern Ports and Fremantle Ports through digital integration of data sets. The advantage of planning the approach to creating the structure of the Digital Asset Management Plans is that it provides the asset managers with an ISO55001 compliant system with automated updated of the state of their assets and future expenditure projections information at the press of a button. The digital collation of data from various data sets to enable informed asset management decisions on strategies and tactics. The dashboards also provide “plan on a page” information for briefing and reporting to managers and executives. And the hierarchy capability of the informational allows operations and maintenance team members to identify problem assets quickly. \nMark Bourhill\, Executive Advisor Asset Management\, GHD\nMark is a Fellow of the Institute of Engineers Australia and a committee member of the WA Chapter of the AMC. His experience with GHD Advisory Asset Management covers facilities and infrastructure asset consulting services for municipal\, state and federal government agencies\, property management\, resource and minerals miners and processors\, and private owners of assets. Mark’s asset management experience includes preparation of Asset Management Plans for all types of facilities and infrastructure assets\, reviews and development of maintenance strategies and plans\, planning and delivery of condition appraisal programs\, and development of lifecycle cost analysis models. \n\nUsing spatial technology to navigate asset management for geographically dispersed portfolios\nAsset management as a best practice philosophy hit the mainstream in the early 2000’s. Geographic information systems were developed in the 1980’s and have been typically preoccupied with the management and analysis of spatial data in the scientific and planning based industries. It was only 15 years ago that web mapping become widespread with the advent of Google Maps. Cloud and computing similarly became secure\, affordable and adoptable at a large scale in the last decade. Mobile devices now have the sophistication\, connectivity\, and computing power to consume and collect significant volumes of data on-site connecting mobile workers like never before. Finally\, computing clusters are capable of processing increasingly vast volumes of data making spatial techniques such as high fidelity 3D photogrammetry modelling able to be applied to very large and complex assets. The coalescence of this technology and the increasing demand from high value asset financiers for more systematic and data-driven approaches to asset management signal a new horizon in this industry. \nThis paper investigates both the potential and proven uses of spatial technologies to facilitate asset management best practice. One key example being the use of collaborative\, trusted\, current\, and accessible information portals to enable data-driven decision making across the landscape of asset interactions – from the board room to the crib room. Such a solution was designed and implemented for the inspection\, scoping and remediation of a large marine asset facilitating three-way collaboration between asset owner\, owner’s engineer and remediation contractor. A second example sees WA’s Department of Education utilising spatial data\, photogrammetry techniques and the web to carry out statewide condition assessments of over 800 facilities. \nJane Hogben\, Digital Assets Lead\, Duratec\nJane has over 20 years of experience in the geospatial data management and analytics space for a range of disciplines including environmental\, engineering and asset management. She currently leads Duratec’s reality data delivery programme engaging with our clients to support them gaining maximum value from asset digitisation and digital engineering.

SUMMARY:Sydney - Securing Your Asset Management Budget
DESCRIPTION:Asset managers are often pawns in achieving an organisation’s desired balance of “cost\, risk\, and performance”. Put another way\, when the numbers don’t add up\, one or more of these three characteristics must change— but which? Two of the characteristics are readily evident and measurable\, while risk is not. Achieving desired performance along with budget cuts seems seductively possible— for a while. But like gravity\, the inevitable increase in risk exposure\, in the form of deteriorating reliability and availability\, takes hold. Like gravity and mass\, reliability and availability possess inertia. Thus\, by the time the impacts of budget cuts become evident\, the originator has taken their bonus and left the scene of the crime\, leaving a successor with the hard sell of recovery\, which may take years of additional expenditure. Successful asset managers understand the importance of protecting their budget through the defensibility of every line item of expenditure. This presentation by Jim Kennedy will explore the production of a defensible preventive maintenance program as an essential core of any asset management plan. Key to this exploration is “risk and maths”\, noting that it is not the task that determines the budget cost but how often the task must be done to assure desired performance. \nClick here to register\n  \n\nAbout the speaker:\nJames (Jim) Kennedy\, Director\, Interlogis Consulting Pty Ltd; Founding Chair and Past Sensei\, Asset Management Council (Australia); and Past Member IEC TC56 – Dependability Standards.\n \nJim is a Mechanical Engineer with postgraduate qualifications in Risk Management and also in Maintenance Engineering and Management from Swinburne University in Melbourne. He has over 55 years’ experience in maintenance and asset management in the aerospace\, rail\, power\, water\, and defence industries. \nFor the last 30 years\, Jim has been directly involved in asset management activities\, including 9 years as Technical Director of the Maintenance Engineering Society of Australia (MESA) and 8 years as Chair and Board member of the Asset Management Council. He has authored two manuals on Reliability Centred Maintenance and Asset Management and has presented 70+ papers in Australia\, Europe\, the Middle East\, Africa\, and South America. \nOver the last 15 years\, Jim has worked part-time with Australian Maritime Defence in adapting an evolving asset management discipline to a military environment with a long history. Jim’s standards activity in the IEC Technical Committee TC56 includes either new or revised standards for Reliability\, Maintenance and Maintainability\, Support and Supportability\, Dependability Specifications\, and Reliability Centred Maintenance.

SUMMARY:Melbourne - Court Services Victoria Critical Asset Failure
DESCRIPTION:Court Services Victoria (CSV) has experienced several critical infrastructure failures in recent years due to inadequate asset maintenance funds. Many assets supporting essential safety measures\, such as HVAC\, fire services\, switchboards\, and emergency lighting\, have reached the end of their life and will require replacement or renewal to keep court facilities safe and operational. When an asset reaches the end of its useful life or does not meet current needs and requirements\, we can either replace the asset immediately or keep operating it until it fails. \nIt is important to understand the condition and criticality of the assets to be able to “sweat” them (doing more with less) until they fail. Timely intervention through proactive asset management strategies will assist in prolonging the useful life of assets and will\, in turn\, allow for the orderly replacement of critical assets at the end of their life cycle. \nWhen an asset does eventually fail\, it is sometimes very difficult to predict the consequences. Within the court environment\, consequences can include delays or denial of access to justice for court users\, proceedings becoming more difficult or expensive\, and increased risks to Occupational Health and Safety of court users. \nIn response to one such recent critical asset failure at 436 Lonsdale Street\, Melbourne\, a major program was undertaken comprising 16 interrelated projects across seven sites to replace courtrooms\, associated facilities\, and office accommodation\, impacting nearly 1\,000 people across the Courts Group. CSV’s BE Division led the program with input from across CSV and the court jurisdictions. \nClick here to register\n  \n\nAbout the speaker:\nVijay Eden\, Manager\, Asset Systems\, Court Services Victoria\n \nVijay is a seasoned asset management professional with an engineering background. He has more than 30 years of leadership experience in strategic asset management in both the public and private sectors. Vijay is proficient in providing high-quality service\, advice\, and support in the delivery of whole-of-asset lifecycle projects and improvements associated with infrastructure matters from concept to completion\, within a unique and complex portfolio of public buildings. He has a proven track record in implementing Asset Management Systems\, Computerised Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS)\, promoting proactive maintenance\, and leading reliability engineering. \nVijay’s expertise includes ensuring compliance with the AMAF annual maturity assessments\, Essential Safety Measures (ESM)\, Quality Management Systems (QMS)\, and Occupational Health and Safety (OHS). He also supports sustainability initiatives and Service Level Agreements (SLA) in contracts. He is passionate about stakeholder engagement\, change management\, ongoing continuous improvement\, and mentoring new asset management professionals.
