SUMMARY:Perth - AMPEAK Insights Proactive Asset Management in the Digital Age
DESCRIPTION:“AMPEAK Insights: Proactive Asset Management in the Digital Age” offers a deep dive into three pivotal presentations from AMPEAK 2023. This session illuminates the challenges and solutions surrounding “Infant Mortality” in assets across industries\, emphasizing its unforeseen occurrences and mitigation strategies. It further delves into the transformative journey of Water Corporation’s shift from traditional data handling to the innovative Operations Intelligence (OI) framework\, underscoring the power of data-driven decision-making in asset management. Lastly\, the event showcases Silver Edge Technologies’ ground-breaking approach in devising a 10-year renewals program for urban rail\, highlighting the synergy between analytical data and engineering expertise. Together\, these presentations encapsulate the essence of modern\, proactive asset management strategies in our increasingly digital world. \nClick here to register\n  \nAbout the presentations and speakers: \nInfant Mortality – Case Studies with Practical Solutions \nInfant Mortality can (and does) occur in all industries. Early failure of assets is generally known as Infant Mortality. These early failures can occur on newly commissioned assets or recently refurbished or maintained assets. These failures can cause delays to projects\, resulting in significant lost revenue\, as well as exposure to safety risks. \nThis presentation will explain in detail the theory of Infant Mortality and use a number of case studies to illustrate examples of Infant Mortality during different phases of the life cycle. While most asset managers are familiar with Infant Mortality during the early life or commissioning phase\, this paper will focus on the occurrence of Infant Mortality during the operate and maintain phase of the life cycle. In each case study\, potential mitigation will be outlined\, demonstrating how the failure and the resulting consequences could have been avoided or at least minimised. \nAt the end of this presentation\, the audience will have a better understanding of Infant Mortality and the consequences of not anticipating its occurrence. The presentation will also provide some practical measures to prevent or mitigate the occurrence of Infant Mortality. \nMark Mackenzie\, Principal Advisor\, One North \nMark is a highly qualified and experienced engineer with over thirty five years’ experience in maintenance\, reliability\, and asset management. He is a Chartered Engineer\, a Certified Maintenance and Reliability Engineer and a Certified Fellow of Asset Management who is also a Fellow of Engineers Australia and an Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of Western Australia. Mark has worked extensively in Australia and overseas in a variety of roles and industries. He has worked in multinational companies\, as well as specialist consulting companies where his technical and leadership advice is keenly sought and received. He is an experienced facilitator and a sought – after speaker who regularly presents technical papers and tutorials at national and international conferences. He also delivers university lectures to undergraduates and post graduates and provides training on behalf of the Asset Management Council of Australia. \n\n \nOperations Intelligence – Improving Asset Management through effective use of data \nWater Corporation is a large\, complex organisation with around 4\,000 people. We service over 17\,000KM of sewer mains\, supply almost 400 billion litres of water\, and operate a vast number of treatment processes state-wide. \nTo achieve these feats efficiently and safely\, we need high-quality data about our assets and the confidence to use this data in decision-making. Ideally\, our data should drive process improvements\, leading to superior product quality with reduced labour\, chemicals\, energy\, and capital expenditure. For this to happen\, the right information must be presented to the appropriate audience in an understandable format and at the correct cadence. \nIn the past\, our approach relied heavily on Excel spreadsheets. While these were relatively user-friendly\, they had limited capabilities. They were time-consuming\, error-prone\, and challenging to scale. Extracting insights was entirely manual\, as was the integration of multiple data streams. \nOur solution was to develop a PI Asset Framework database\, which we named Operations Intelligence (OI). \nThe primary objectives in developing OI were to make operational data meaningful and accessible to the entire business. We also aimed to create opportunities for faster decision-making as close to the operational front as possible. The technical nature of the framework allows us to identify the elements of a process\, specify relationships within that process\, and organise these in a manner that’s easy to understand. Moreover\, it’s been designed to work across all our projects and teams. This means we can standardise all data streams into one framework. By establishing a single source of truth\, we’ve ensured that all operational and asset decisions are made using aligned data. \nOI has rapidly enhanced our data maturity\, setting us on the path to becoming a data-driven business where accurate and effective information underpins all decisions. \nBradley Shand\, Senior Technical Advisor – Advanced Operational Solutions\, Water Corporation \nBradley Shand works for the Water Corporation as a Senior Technical Advisor in Advanced Operational Solutions. Since starting his career eight years ago as a process engineer in wastewater treatment he has since expanded to work across the full spectrum of water assets. In recent years Bradley has specialised on the enhancement and use of operational data and converting it to functional information. He has long been an advocate for improved asset and process management through effective use of data and information. This is in pursuit of improving operational and investment sustainability of being able to do more with less. \n\n \nDevising Long Term Asset Renewal Plans with Health Indicators \nPublic infrastructure asset owners grapple with a costly trade-off: limiting the risk of asset failure while meeting service level requirements. It’s essential to consider all available risk indicators. This consideration ensures a balance between implementing a proactive strategy for enhanced decision-making and reacting to asset failures. A significant challenge is crafting a combination of analytical and engineering solutions that consolidate available asset\, condition\, and operational data for better maintenance and operational decision-making. \nSilver Edge Technologies was engaged to devise an optimised 10-year renewals programme for an urban rail operator. Our approach centred on analysing data from various sources\, constructing a linear model of the network\, and aligning asset condition data with this model. Drawing from our extensive experience in the practical application of asset management\, we collaboratively developed track health indices. These were visualised alongside condition data on an interactive dashboard\, facilitating a prioritised 10-year renewal plan. This dashboard offers insights for engineering examinations and in-depth exploration of condition data from neighbouring locations. \nOur engineers conducted field inspections of critical assets and sites to further validate the insights from the dashboard. Data from these inspections\, combined with dashboard information\, was utilised to pinpoint and prioritise locations for upcoming maintenance. Major periodic maintenance was planned and outlined at these sites\, capitalising on our expertise in maintenance execution. \nOur approach enhanced understanding of asset performance and condition\, leading to heightened confidence in maintenance budgeting and resource allocation. This understanding ensures fact-based planning and increased efficiency in long-term maintenance due to the standardisation of planned renewal works. We realised efficiency gains via automatic data ingestion into a dashboard that incorporates intricate asset health calculations and prioritisation indices. Importantly\, we found that synergies between analytical and engineering resources can be nurtured in asset management\, especially in situations where data silos or complexity might otherwise obstruct engineering assessments and maintenance planning. \nJozef Raijmakers\, Asset Management Lead\, Silver Edge \nJozef has 12 years of experience in Asset Management and is a specialist in Rail Technology with proven ability to analyse complex business processes\, initiate improvements\, and implement solutions. Jozef has recently delivered a 10-year rail maintenance and renewal plan for the public transport owner’s major periodic maintenance project. Previously in the Netherlands\, he worked on the ProRail performance-based maintenance contracts\, where he was responsible for the implementation of work management processes and maintenance contracts\, and initiating optimisations for maintenance activities based on analytics of remote condition monitoring technology. Other recent technology projects include coordinating the commissioning and operational readiness of track-recording vehicles and working with Australian heavy haul operators creating the strategy\, processes\, and operational readiness plan for a fault management Control Centre for rail networks. He also developed a comprehensive Digital Asset Management Information Strategy and implementation roadmap of projects. This digital strategy includes introducing and implementing new technologies such as Remote Condition Monitoring and Digital Twins. \n\n \nClick here to register

Tuku Iho in this instance is explained as “our living legacy”. This reflects the ambition to leave the estate and the wider environment in a better condition for future generations. There are four pillars that provide the structure for the framework\, which highlight the complexities and interrelationships across all areas of sustainability. Tuku Iho includes a key action to mitigate the impacts to / from climate change\, while being more comprehensively sustainable. \nAdditionally\, the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) is a participant of the Carbon Neutral Government Programme (CNGP)\, which has been set up to accelerate the reduction of emissions within the public sector. The CNGP requires the measurement and verification of emissions annually\, and a number of key emissions reduction activities to achieve carbon neutrality. \nLee and Rachel will provide insight into the NZDF’s progress to-date\, and discuss how the Defence Estate is mitigating and adapting to climate change\, including how sustainability is being embedded into building designs to reduce emissions in both construction and operation\, as well as to keep people and assets safe from climate hazards that are likely to occur in the area. \nDr Lee Bint\, Director Sustainability\, New Zealand Defence Force\nLee has been leading the Defence sustainability journey since 2018\, establishing and implementing their first sustainability framework and leading a team of technical experts across energy\, sustainable buildings\, resilience and sustainability. During this time\, she has also co-founded the all-of-government sustainability group\, supported numerous other government agencies in commencing on their sustainability pathway\, held the position as Vice Chair of the Carbon & Energy Professionals Board and welcomed her daughter into the world. \nPrior to Defence\, Lee worked as a Sustainable Building Scientist at BRANZ while also completing the Sustainable Business Council Future Leaders’ Programme and being elected the Future Leader’s Representative on the Sustainable Business Council Board\, and also working with UnionAID as the hosts of the Myanmar Young Leaders Programme. \nLee completed her PhD in Building Science at Victoria University of Wellington\, which included the development of a Water Efficiency Rating Tool that was awarded runner-up at the Grow Wellington Bright Ideas Challenge in 2011. \nRachel Wood\, Sustainability Advisor\, GHD\nRachel is an Environmental Economist with a master’s degree in Economics from Auckland University of Technology (AUT) majoring in Ecological Footprint Accounting. As a student\, she discovered a passion for resource management\, climate change research\, environmental economics (impact analysis)\, and social development. She is interested in improving the sustainability of social and economic activity through innovative solutions and effective strategies. During her time at GHD\, she has become more engaged with greenhouse gas accounting for carbon emissions auditing and Climate Change Risk Assessments. \nPresentation 2: Climate-related disclosures\, scenario analysis\, and the TCFD framework – what it means for asset management in practice\nWhat can – and should – asset managers do now in the face of increasing climate change impacts\, evolving climate policies\, and potentially insufficient financial and human resources to address it? The Taskforce on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) framework offers an answer – about how to manage climate change strategy\, targets\, action planning\, risk management and financial decisions. \nTCFD reporting – also called climate-related disclosures or climate statements in New Zealand – is now mandatory for most of the country’s financial system and listed companies. It is strongly incentivised for the public sector\, too\, which reports to the Ministry for the Environment and Climate Change Commission under the Zero Carbon Act. \nApplied to asset management\, TCFD reporting can consolidate information on where you want to get to\, what you need to do\, and the good work you’re already doing – but perhaps not thinking of it as climate-related. In the guise of a reporting framework\, TCFD reporting is a strategic planning exercise\, which asset managers can use to test the resilience of their current strategies. Like testing a plane in a wind tunnel\, the TCFD framework uses climate scenario analysis to consider different plausible futures\, such as rapid decarbonisation or ‘hot house’ warming scenarios. \nWith insurers and banks among those required to report\, and international adoption of TCFD reporting in the UK\, TCFD is where all entities’ climate change reporting is going. And it can be immensely helpful to asset managers seeking to organise their approach to climate change. \nMatt Raeburn\, Principal – Strategic Advisory (Climate Change and Sustainability)\, WSP\nMatt is a Principal climate strategist based in WSP’s Wellington office with 18 years of experience in Aotearoa New Zealand and the US. An American-Kiwi who spent a decade in environmental law and policy in Washington DC and Portland\, Oregon\, Matt worked in the Ministry for the Environment’s Climate Directorate from 2018-2021. There\, he implemented parallel TCFD reporting regimes under the Zero Carbon Act and Financial Sector Amendment Act. \nOver 7 years in New Zealand\, Matt has worked with corporate\, council and Central Government asset managers on their climate risks\, strategies\, and reporting projects as a consultant for EY\, Beca\, and now WSP. He recently developed climate scenarios for NZ’s construction and property sector and previously led delivery of the Wellington Regional Climate Change Impact Assessment. \nAdele Jones\, Principal – Strategic Advisory (Asset Management)\, WSP\nAdele is a Principal in our Strategic Advisory team with 20+ years of experience\, leading and delivering a diverse range of strategic advisory\, asset management\, network management and procurement projects\, both nationally and internationally. Adele has worked across a wide variety of horizontal and vertical infrastructure portfolios\, including transport\, 3-waters\, property and buildings\, recreation and aviation. \nAdele’s technical skills span wide range of asset management practices at strategic\, tactical and operational levels\, with a strong focus on aligning with the International Standard for asset management\, ISO 55001. She has experience in asset management policy\, asset management system development\, strategic asset management planning\, investment decision making approaches\, business case development\, asset management planning\, risk management and asset data and information management practices.

SUMMARY:Perth - Asset Management in Government
DESCRIPTION:Digitising Asset Management and Building a Capable Workforce – Marty Stafford\, Assets Manager\, Southern Ports \nIn 2020\, Southern Ports set out to transform its existing asset management practices into a world class\, fully digital Asset Management System (AMS). \nGuided by a clear Strategic Development Plan with a 10-year horizon\, and a vision of ‘Strong Regional Ports\, Strong Regions\, the Board and Executive devised a comprehensive asset management vision and direction. With unwavering leadership and foundations in place\, the Asset Management team developed and implemented a fully integrated and digitised AMS\, aligned with ISO 55000 and asset management best practice\, including the four principles of the Asset Management Council’s Asset Management Concept Model. \nWithin three years\, Southern Ports transitioned from ad hoc\, manual asset management – underpinned by paper-based policies\, disparate databases and manual record-keeping and analysis – to a fully digitised system. The AMS intrinsically links each element of the organisation’s asset management framework with its core vision and objectives\, and it is supported by robust capabilities\, assurance systems and a strong culture of learning. \nAs part of an asset management system transformation\, Southern Ports developed and deployed an online continuous learning system and information library to help develop a workforce capable of meeting its asset management objectives. \nThe process involved an analysis of ‘current state’ staff training and experience\, as well as training needs and career path development options. Southern Ports developed a robust methodology for mapping Global Forum on Maintenance & Asset Management (GFMAM) Modules across all role dimensions\, capturing key aspects of knowledge\, skills and experience\, and how they aligned with subject knowledge across the GFMAM subjects. \nTraining occurred at all three regional port sites\, primarily through online modules via a dedicated training management system. The system recorded and retained certification and verification of competencies\, in line with Certified Practitioner in Asset Management and World Partners in Asset Management CAMA examination processes. \nAsset Management in Synergy – Andre Pratama\, Asset Management Lead\, Synergy (Electricity Generation and Retail Corporation) \nAsset management can be a complex subject and often misunderstood. Synergy has recently progressed its asset management journey and conceptualised an ‘infinity diagram’ model to link many parts of the organisation. SUMMARY:Melbourne - Moving away from reactive maintenance using a systems-based approach
DESCRIPTION:Court Services Victoria (CSV) provides corporate and administrative services that support judicial independence in the administration of justice in Victoria. \nWhen CSV was formed\, it inherited a legacy of asset management issues that included an ageing asset base which was not fit for purpose\, limited asset information\, a largely reactive maintenance strategy\, no centralised location for asset information\, multiple changes in leadership\, and staff who operated predominately in silos. \nSolutions to these issues included a fully integrated system-based approach to assist with breaking down barriers of a siloed organisation\, utilisation of a hierarchy of Asset Management Systems\, focusing on the whole of asset lifecycle and compliance with the Victorian Government’s Asset Management and Accountability Framework (AMAF). \nThese initiatives assisted CSV to move away from a backlog filled reactive maintenance strategy\, where catastrophic failure of critical assets could potentially lead to the shutting down of a justice system\, to a proactive 10-year program of works. \nClick here to register\n  \nAbout the speaker: \nVijay Eden\, Manager Asset Systems\, Court Services Victoria \nVijay is a seasoned asset management professional from an engineering background with a passion for Occupational Health and Safety.
