DESCRIPTION:Building Information Modelling (BIM) has been around for a long time and is now becoming commonplace\, and often a requirement\, on many building and infrastructure projects. The key component of BIM is the information element\, and when properly adopted it provides the backbone for efficiently managing data from the early conception of the asset being built through to operations and handover. \nHowever\, this can only be achieved with data that is well-defined early and the use of open standards\, or OpenBIM. This approach allows both the 3D geometry representing the asset and its connected data to move between various platforms or lifecycle stages\, always remaining accessible and able to be used in combination with 3D geometry (where required). \nEric Bugeja\, Chairperson of buildingSMART Australasia\, will provide you with an overview of information management best practice and the tools available to improve project efficiency. \nClick here to register \n\n		\n			\n				\n			\n			\n		 \n		\n			Eric has been at the forefront of applying technology to improve efficiency. His early engineering career focused on the development of leading-edge automation for manufacturing processes\, using technology to enhance both quality and production speed. This role provides a unique perspective compared with contractor-side delivery of multi-billion-dollar projects\, requiring Maddison to carefully balance asset replacement and maintenance while prioritising safety\, quality\, cost\, time\, and the welfare of both guests and animals.\n		\n			\n		\n\n		\n			\n				\n			\n			\n		 \n		\n			Sally Busch has extensive experience across the aviation\, defence\, and energy sectors\, bringing a multidisciplinary perspective to asset management. At Ausgrid\, she shapes asset strategies that balance cost\, risk and performance to guide decisions supporting a rapidly evolving electricity network. Her background includes technical leadership in asset strategy and performance\, climate resilience\, modelling\, reliability\, and strategic engineering support across the asset lifecycle.\n		\n			\n		\n\n		\n			\n				\n			\n			\n		 \n		\n			Gavin Cavanagh has held a number of Systems Engineering positions at TfNSW\, Sydney Trains and NSW TrainLink over the past nine years\, along with Asset Resilience roles more recently. SUMMARY:Sydney - Building Resilient Assets in an Era of Climate Extremes
DESCRIPTION:The increasing frequency and severity of extreme weather events in New South Wales pose significant challenges to the resilience of government-owned assets and the communities they serve. Many public infrastructure systems — including roads\, bridges\, schools\, and utilities — were not designed to withstand current climate risks\, resulting in repeated damage\, costly rebuilds\, and long-term service disruptions. A key challenge lies in transitioning from reactive recovery efforts to proactive\, risk-informed asset planning and investment. Limited funding\, fragmented governance\, and inconsistent data on asset vulnerability further complicate coordinated resilience-building efforts. However\, there are growing opportunities to address these gaps. \nThe NSW Reconstruction Authority’s leadership in developing the State Disaster Mitigation Plan\, alongside AECOM’s technical expertise in resilience modelling and Moody’s Analytics’ insights into the rising economic costs of disasters\, are paving the way for smarter\, data-driven decision-making. Through collaborative planning\, stronger intergovernmental coordination\, and targeted investment in resilience upgrades\, NSW has a unique opportunity to embed long-term sustainability and community protection into its asset management systems. \nNSW continues to grapple with escalating climate-driven disasters — from the severe flooding in Northern NSW earlier this year to the bushfires in past seasons — that have spotlighted vulnerabilities in government-managed infrastructure. The state’s response demonstrates that the government’s approach must go beyond reactive recovery and focus on proactive resilience in asset management and planning. \nThis NSW-based resilience panel consists of representatives from: \n\nThe NSW Reconstruction Authority (RA)\, backed by more than $300 million in funding\, leading the recovery and mitigation effort through Australia’s first State Disaster Mitigation Plan (SDMP)\, released in February 2024\, and via grant programs such as the Community Assets Program and Central West Recovery & Resilience package (valued at $100 million). Through these initiatives\, damaged infrastructure — such as schools\, bridges\, and community centres — is being rebuilt with enhanced flood resilience and hazard-adaptive design.\nAECOM\, whose expertise in climate adaptation\, risk modelling\, and infrastructure hardening underpins projects such as the Sydney Resilience Strategy and climate-risk assessments for regional NSW retail centres affected by floods and cyclones.\nMoody’s Analytics\, which provides robust analytical modelling approaches. Prof Maiti’s research interests include safety analytics\, risk assessment\, AI and data science\, quality management\, and engineering ergonomics. He authored the textbook “Multivariate Statistical Modeling in Engineering and Management\,” published by CRC Press. Prof Maiti works with world leading companies like Tata Steel Limited\, Adani Group\, Coal India\, Haldia Petrochemicals\, etc. He is Fellow Member of Royal Statistical Society\, UK and Institute of Engineers (India). DESCRIPTION:A “squirrel store” is\, as the name suggests\, a store of spares kept outside the main stores system and warehousing program. These stores are not measured or controlled for quantity and\, depending on storage practices\, may also be lacking in quality. The use of spares from these stores remains a hidden cost and can mask the true cost of maintaining plant and equipment. \nThere are many reasons squirrel stores come into being.
