SUMMARY:Webinar - Open Standards and BIM - what are they\, why are they important\, how to use them to your advantage
DESCRIPTION:Building Information Modelling (BIM) has been around for a long time and is now becoming commonplace\, and often a requirement\, on many building and infrastructure projects. The key component of BIM is the information element\, and when properly adopted it provides the backbone for efficiently managing data from the early conception of the asset being built through to operations and handover. \nHowever\, this can only be achieved with data that is well-defined early and the use of open standards\, or OpenBIM. This approach allows both the 3D geometry representing the asset and its connected data to move between various platforms or lifecycle stages\, always remaining accessible and able to be used in combination with 3D geometry (where required). \nEric Bugeja\, Chairperson of buildingSMART Australasia\, will provide you with an overview of information management best practice and the tools available to improve project efficiency. \nClick here to register \n\n		\n			\n				\n			\n			\n		 \n		\n			Eric has been at the forefront of applying technology to improve efficiency. Andy Hagan will set out: \n\nWhy lifting AM maturity is the fastest path to productivity gains – and how New Zealand currently ranks fourth-to-last in the OECD.\nThe NIP’s three practical levers for closing the gap – planning\, funding stability and assurance.\nWhat all this means for asset owners\, AM practitioners and the 40 % of the infrastructure workforce already dedicated to operations and maintenance.\n\nDelegates will leave with a clear view of where the NIP lands\, what will change in their day-to-day practice\, and where their expertise is critical to success. \n\n		\n			\n				\n			\n			\n		 \n		\n			Andy Hagan is General Manager\, Investment at the New Zealand Infrastructure Commission\, Te Waihanga. In this role he is responsible for the Commission’s work across the investment management lifecycle from infrastructure investment planning to delivery to asset management. Prior to working at the Commission\, Andy spent almost 20 years at the New Zealand Treasury in a range of roles spanning financial markets\, infrastructure and commercial issues\, including as a member of the Treasury’s Executive Leadership Team. He has also consulted to a range of clients\, primarily focussing on infrastructure funding and financing. Andy has a Master of Business from the University of Otago and was awarded the New Zealand Public Service Medal for outstanding public service in 2022.\n		\n			\n		\n  \n\n  \nAdvanced corrosion modelling for lifetime extension of overhead power transmission lines \nTranspower’s Transmission lines span over 12\,000 kilometres across New Zealand. The lines traverse through varying terrain such as the benign Central Otago region right through to extreme salt spray and corrosion areas such as Tiwai and Oteranga Bay. The terrain makes corrosion highly localised with salt transport coming many kilometres inland due to wind funnelling. With an aging fleet\, the forecasted reconductoring spend over the next 15 years was increasing from $50M to $250M per year. \nHistorically the conductor health model forecasting replacements used age and an expected life using conductor type\, location and where it was known that the conductor was not fully greased (grease holidays). This would be manually adjusted for observed condition and eddy current “Cormon” testing that detects the zinc galvanising loss on the steel core strands. While these methods are relatively advanced by international standards\, they have remained inherently conservative. Transpower needed a model that could confidently and safely extend the forecasted replacement life. \nDrone condition assessment and the defect model has provided Transpower with the ability to manage the risk and flatten the reconductoring curve. It allows for a manageable ramp up in heavy wiring crew resources\, reduces revenue price shocks and buys time to align replacements with tactical upgrades to incorporate new power demand. \nThe defect model uses drone visual data being acquired alongside accelerated corrosion testing\, and destructive testing. Corrosion of the aluminium strands in Aluminium Clad Steel Reinforced (ACSR) creates a white corrosion product that fills the void spaces between strands and creates bulges. The model can assess if the conductor is safe to maintain in service and predict when it will become unsafe. The model uses Finite Element sub-modelling of bulges\, and a power line design global modelling program (PLS-CADD) for defined weather cases and risk profiles. The challenges include automated image processing\, storage and retrieval of drone data. Defects are classified as broken strands\, white powder\, bulging\, strands out of lay\, spacer damage\, copper corrosion etc\, with the white power bulges in ACSR cables being processed further by the defect model. The model includes modelling the increases in temperature at bulges due to loss of aluminium cross-sectional area\, and the decrease in yield stress and ultimate tensile stress. \nThe defect growth rate has been estimated to forecast replacement in the longer term. The model was calibrated using destructive testing of ex-service samples and accelerated corrosion/salt spray cabinet samples. Corrosion maps based on historical changes in condition assessment data\, and a NZ industry standard based on atmospheric corrosion of coupons\, are used to estimate the defect growth rates. \n\n		\n			\n				\n			\n			\n		 \n		\n			Kevin Stevens has worked as a Performance Engineer/Asset Modeller at Transpower NZ Ltd since May 2020. Prior to that he was a Senior Consultant in the petrochemical and energy sectors at MPT Solutions/Quest Integrity Group\, 2010 to 2019. MPT was a spinoff company from the metallurgy and corrosion teams within Industrial Research Ltd (a New Zealand Crown Research Institute)\, where Kevin worked as a senior scientist from 1993 to 2010. Kevin undertook his academic training with a BSc(Hons) and PhD at Victoria University of Wellington\, from 1986 to 1993.\n		\n			\n		\n\n		\n			\n				\n			\n			\n		 \n		\n			Cijina Lazo-Ron is an experienced engineer that started her career in Network Planning of the Distribution grid in South Africa in 2009. Since then\, she has spent time undertaking overhead line designs\, before moving to New Zealand. Cijina currently heads up the Asset Planning Transmission Lines team\, with a focus on strategic planning and portfolio improvements to improve asset health. Can we demonstrate prudency and efficiency?\n\nAsset criticality across the portfolio was workshopped with key stakeholders in the organisation to identify the required operational response to asset failure and its consequences. Regardless of asset class\, criticality was assigned in a manner consistent with the organisation’s enterprise risk framework\, allowing consistent consideration of service provision risk\, regardless of the asset class (e.g. water mains\, vs roads\, vs buildings). A Lifecycle Intervention model (LIM) was then developed to: \n\nForecast the portfolio’s future asset deterioration and risk levels over a 10-year planning period.\nAlign intervention methods (such as condition assessment\, functional testing\, maintenance inspections\, repair\, rehab\, and replacement) with the business risk appetite.\n\nOutputs from the LIM were visualised in a dashboard tool that is data-driven\, fully interactive\, and transparent. The innovative tool allows asset owners to effectively engage stakeholders\, communicating investment needs at all levels\, from board / executive to field crews and the community. \n\n		\n			\n				\n			\n			\n		 \n		\n			Paul is the Technical Director – Asset Management at BetterAIM. After almost 25yrs as an Asset Management practitioner\, he took up the challenge of sharing his experience across other industries through BetterAIMs Advisory Services\, sharing practical learnings across common issues. \n		\n			\n		\n  \n\n\nRevolutionising the way complex systems are engineered and managed using a digital model – Jim Stancombe\, Director of Relationships\, I&E Systems\nTo build and run efficient and productive operations you need to design\, construct and commission complex systems. These complex systems are jam packed with hardware and software that is interconnected. Every object has different functions\, different connections\, and different relationships. During the lifecycle the system needs maintenance and upgrades. A deep understanding of these systems is essential to the ability to control a project and asset. \nSurprisingly\, in or digitally advanced world\, teams of engineers still draw the designs for complex systems in a flat manner\, much like a picture. This approach creates thousands of individual drawings and documents produced by different teams working on the system\, all of which capture bits of information about it. If something is changed\, all the related documents must be found and updated. Using decentralised processes that depend on individual drawings and documents to manage complex systems is extremely inefficient. BIM does not account for complex systems. \nA digital model is a true representation of the complex system at any point in the lifecycle. It’s a real digital twin. It is a centralised database containing all current and historical hardware and software information about the system. It can be accessed simultaneously by engineers\, managers and other stakeholders from any location\, at any time. \nFrom fibre optic networks to electrical\, instrumentation\, and control systems; from communications and IT systems to security\, CCTV\, and building management systems\, this software solution can model any type of complex system. \nChange leaders are transforming the way they engineer and manage complex systems. Fortescue recently used a digital model to design\, construct and commission their complex systems on their $4bn Iron Bridge project without producing a traditional engineering drawing. Public Transport Authority of Western Australia (PTA) are currently using a digital model for their major Metronet program and have contractually mandated that service providers must handover a digital model at completion\, not thousands of engineering drawings and documents. \n\n		\n			\n				\n			\n			\n		 \n		\n			Jim Stancombe is based in Perth\, WA and is the Director of Relationships for I&E Systems. Jim is engaged in bringing about a revolution in the way complex systems are engineered and managed. This work is focused on embracing a digital model and eliminating decentralised processes that rely on drawings and documents. Jim worked at the National Australia Bank for 16 years where he held senior leadership roles in operations management\, risk\, and sales. Jim studied Economics at the University of Tasmania and received an MBA from Monash University. He is a certified black belt six sigma practitioner.\n		\n			\n		\n\n\nIntroducing un-crewed aircraft to carry out effective BVLOS operations to deliver ‘Digital Visualisation’ outputs for ‘Linear Asset Inspections’ and ‘Right of Way Surveys’ – Anthony Roe\, Chief Growth Officer\, Explorate\nThis presentation will describe the benefits and challenges of using un-crewed aircraft to carry out Digital Visualisation ‘Asset Integrity Inspections’ and ‘Right of Way’ (ROW) Surveys over a linear distance of 540km using BVLOS (Beyond Visual Line of Site) techniques. \nTraditionally\, manned helicopters and fixed wing aircraft have been used to carry out the survey activities given the challenges of the long distances\, and the weight of payloads required to execute the surveys. \nThe presentation will describe the approach and technical challenges to carry out successful BVLOS Asset Operations using un-crewed aircraft across a 540km pipeline in Australia. \nThe presentation will share the outputs using AI Models (artificial intelligence) for the features extracted\, of both anomalies and points of interest and describe how the initial projects could be expanded into multi-modal\, single mission sorties over long distances. \nThe project was a ‘first of a kind’ successful milestone in the use of BVLOS\, long range\, high payload\, un-crewed helicopter systems. \n\n		\n			\n				\n			\n			\n		 \n		\n			Anthony Roe is an experienced practitioner in the introduction and operationalisation of Digital Asset Management. He is particularly passionate about exploring the impact of AI and Industry 5.0 on asset-intensive industries\, addressing the evolving challenges of human-centricity\, digital transformation\, and sustainable maintenance strategies. \nAs a Senior Lecturer and Visiting Fellow at Cranfield University\, Jan contributes to Master’s programs in Digital and Technology Solutions\, Maintenance Engineering\, and Asset Management\, where he bridges academic research with industry application. Additionally\, in his role as Chair of the European Training Committee at EFNMS\, he leads initiatives to develop training and certification programs that equip today’s professionals and the NextGen workforce with the knowledge and skills to navigate the future of the industry. \nJan holds double Master’s degrees in Asset & Maintenance Management and Asset Integrity Management and has been a PhD candidate at TU Delft. His career began in engineering within the built environment\, energy\, and mechanical sectors\, later progressing into senior leadership roles in infrastructure\, telecom\, and government asset management.
