If one finding defines the State of the Asset Management Sector in 2026, it is that the profession already has the tools it needs. What holds it back is the absence of a clear mandate from the top.
When asked to name the biggest bottleneck to implementing an asset management framework, members pointed overwhelmingly to people and organisations rather than technology. Leadership support and executive buy-in topped the list at 34%, followed by process maturity and governance at 31%, and fundamental asset management knowledge at 30%. Technology and tools came last, named by just 10%. For 2 years running, asset management practitioners have pointed to the boardroom and the management layer as the source of the obstacle, well ahead of any concern about their toolkit.
It is an interesting insight because the market conversation around asset management runs in almost the opposite direction. The sector is awash with platforms, sensors, analytics and AI, and the growth in enterprise asset management software shows no sign of slowing. Yet the people doing the work keep telling us their real problem lies somewhere else entirely.
The encouraging half of the story is that where asset management is properly resourced, it delivers. Among organisations that have genuinely invested, 63% report clear, realised benefits, from reduced reactive work to better service delivery and stronger staff productivity. The evidence for asset management is real and widely felt. What holds it back is the willingness of organisations to look at that evidence and back it.
The lesson for the profession is one of advocacy and translation. The most valuable capability members can build may have less to do with technical depth and more to do with persuasion: board-ready value narratives, executive briefings, and a clear line drawn between reliable assets and the financial outcomes leaders care about.
Members themselves are already convinced that the task now is to win over the executives they answer to, and closing that gap may be the highest-leverage move available to the sector in 2026.
