Diagnose gaps in an existing plan

Where does your plan provide strong coverage, and where could it benefit from more attention?

Use “Diagnose my plan” to review an existing Strategic Asset Management Plan (SAMP) or Asset Management Plan (AMP) across 11 dimensions of good practice, including strategic alignment, levels of service, risk, lifecycle planning and governance.

Define your scope, provide your plan and use the gap report to guide your next review. Identified gaps can also become priorities when developing a new draft.

Create a structured SAMP or AMP draft

Give your next plan a stronger starting point.

Define your organisation, project or asset portfolio, choose your plan type and add the objectives it needs to support. The tool guides you through developing a structured draft that you can review, edit and refine section by section.

A SAMP sets the strategic direction for asset management. An AMP details the activities, service levels, resources and costs for a particular set of assets. The guided process helps you consider that relationship as you develop your draft.

Learn from real-world examples

See how other organisations approach the planning challenges you’re working through.

The exemplar library brings together annotated examples from peer organisations, organised by dimensions of good asset management practice. Explore approaches to strategic alignment, risk, lifecycle expenditure, governance and more, then consider how they apply to your own circumstances.

Your context makes the difference

A useful plan needs to reflect the organisation it serves. AM Plan Tools guide you through providing that context.

Define your scope

Identify the organisation, project or portfolio your plan covers, including its sector, jurisdiction and asset classes.

Choose your plan

Select a strategic SAMP or an operational AMP, depending on the work you need to do.

Add your objectives and priorities

Provide the organisational objectives, planning horizon and relevant asset information. You can also use findings from a plan diagnosis to inform your draft.

Generate, review and refine

Work through the draft, check its assumptions and content, and make the changes needed to reflect your organisation.

Complete your review and sign-off

Apply your professional judgement before downloading the draft in Word or PDF for further work.

Built to support your expertise

AM Plan Tools provide decision support. AI-generated drafts and diagnostic findings require review by a competent person who remains accountable for the final plan.

The tools reflect AM Council’s good-practice guidance. AM Council does not review or approve individual member plans, and using the tools does not provide certification or guarantee compliance with a standard.

Your knowledge of your organisation, its assets and its priorities remains central throughout the process.

Questions before you start?

Who can access AM Plan Tools?

AM Plan Tools are available to AM Council members. Sign in with your member login to access them.

Do I need an existing plan?

No. You can start a new SAMP or AMP draft by defining your scope and providing relevant organisational information. If you already have a plan, you can use the diagnostic tool to explore areas for improvement.

Can I use the tools for different asset portfolios?

Yes. You define the scope and select the relevant asset classes. This helps the tool reflect the organisation, project or portfolio you are working on.

Will the tool produce a finished, approved plan?

The tool produces a draft for you to review and develop. You need to check the content, address assumptions and gaps, and follow your organisation’s review and approval processes.

Is the plan I upload kept private?

Yes. Plans you upload or create stay private to your account. They are never added to AM Council’s collection of published plans, and AM Council’s experts cannot see them. You can download or delete your plans at any time from My Plans.

What usage is included with membership?

Membership includes three plan drafts per calendar year. A draft is counted the first time you build a full plan for a scope (an organisation, project or asset portfolio). Editing sections, regenerating them and rebuilding that same plan don’t use another draft. Diagnosing plans and browsing the exemplar library are included. Your remaining drafts are shown on the AM Plan Tools home screen.
