Maintenance for Resilience
This year’s theme, Maintenance for Resilience, will explore how effective maintenance and reliability practices can strengthen organisational resilience, improve asset performance and support continuity in an increasingly complex operating environment.
At the centre of the symposium is the question:
How do maintenance and reliability practitioners keep critical assets safe, reliable and productive when assets are ageing, systems are increasingly connected, data is imperfect and disruption is becoming normal?
The symposium will bring together maintenance and reliability practitioners, asset managers, infrastructure operators, digital specialists, operational technology professionals and resilience leaders to explore the changing role of maintenance in asset-intensive organisations.
Across the day, presentations and case studies will take a practical look at some of the challenges currently facing maintenance and reliability teams, including:
- maintaining ageing assets already under pressure
- developing effective asset tactics and maintenance plans
- designing maintenance readiness into new and greenfield infrastructure
- using AI to create automation and reliability value
- ensuring spares and supply chains support operational resilience

Shane Day is the Asset Management and RAMS Discipline Manager for Downer Rail & Transit Systems, leading a multidisciplinary team of asset management, reliability, availability, maintainability and safety (RAMS) specialists across major rail and transit programs. He has extensive experience across asset management, maintenance operations, reliability engineering and through-life support, with a strong focus on applying data-driven analysis to improve asset performance, operational outcomes and whole-of-life value. A passionate advocate for modern asset management practices, Shane specialises in ISO 55001-aligned asset management, reliability analysis, maintenance strategy development, root cause analysis and asset performance improvement. Throughout his career, he has supported the delivery of major rolling stock, light rail and infrastructure projects, helping organisations bridge the gap between engineering, maintenance and operations to achieve sustainable performance improvements. His approach combines practical operational experience with strategic asset management leadership, ensuring investment and maintenance decisions are evidence-based, risk-informed and focused on delivering measurable business outcomes.
Ready for Takeoff: Effective Spares Management for Operational Resilience at Brisbane Airport
This presentation will share Brisbane Airport’s journey in improving its approach to spare parts management. Presented as a practical case study, it will explore where the journey began, the lessons learned along the way, where the organisation is today, and the next steps towards achieving better practice.
The session will provide practical insights for others looking to strengthen their own spares management processes and improve asset support outcomes.
Mitchell O’Shea is a Reliability Engineer at Brisbane Airport Corporation with eight years of industry experience across water, mining, oil and gas, and aviation. With a background spanning consulting and site-based operations, he brings practical insight into asset reliability, maintenance strategy and operational performance in complex infrastructure environments. Mitchell’s work focuses on improving operational resilience through applied reliability practices, data-informed decision-making and stakeholder collaboration aligned with operational needs. His cross-industry experience enables him to apply lessons learned from diverse asset environments to drive safer and more reliable outcomes.
Maintenance Readiness in a Greenfield Network
Juliano Santos is the Maintenance Director at ACEREZ M&L which is building a new transmission network in the Central-West Orana region. He leads the team that will train workers and look after the systems needed to keep this major energy infrastructure running safely for the next 35 years. Juliano has a keen focus on engineering, technology and problem-solving, including the use of drones, robotics and artificial intelligence to inspect, maintain and operate large energy assets. He is passionate about creating local careers in renewable energy.
Muhammad Tayyab is the Transmission Lines Asset Engineer at ACEREZ M&L which is building a new transmission network in the Central-West Orana region. He leads the asset management function for all things transmission lines and is focussed on understanding how the decisions made during planning and design ultimately affect those responsible for operating and maintaining the assets and associated outcomes. He is particularly interested in making sure reliability and maintainability are considered early at design stage, rather than being addressed once the asset is already in service.
Managing System Disruption and Energy Dependency
Erik Vandenberg is a Certified Fellow of Asset Management (CFAM), Chartered Engineering Executive (CEng, EngExec) and General Manager at Verbrec. With more than 25 years’ experience across energy, mining, and infrastructure, he works with industry and government to develop resilient, sustainable solutions spanning conventional energy, renewable gas, and emerging decarbonisation technologies.
