Spare parts are critical to improving the reliability and availability of equipment, which is readily apparent during corrective and preventative maintenance activities. Appropriate management and utilisation of spares can significantly improve the effectiveness of this work, leading to reliability, availability and cost benefits. This presentation will review and provide practical examples across key areas of spares management, including:
- spares procurement
- storage
- inventory holdings and goods issue
- access and availability during maintenance windows.
Good practice in these areas will help ensure maintenance is completed within the shortest possible window, at optimal cost, and with minimal waste.
The discontinuation of spare parts can have significant cost and engineering implications for many facilities. However, there are practical methods to manage end-of-life components that can greatly reduce the impact. Options such as refurbishment and remanufacturing, staged upgrades, and internal inventory holdings can support continued equipment availability while the risk of obsolescence is managed.

Rhys Carr has eight years of experience in reliability and maintenance, and has had the opportunity to see many examples of best-practice maintenance engineering, as well as some clear examples of ‘what not to do’. As a reliability engineer in manufacturing, he was fortunate to gain exposure to a wide range of assets, from conveyors, gearboxes and motors through to pressure vessels, gas burners, pumps and pipelines. He has also managed and optimised millions of dollars’ worth of engineering inventory, which has given him strong insight into the processes and procedures that can make—or break—engineering stores. Rhys’s hands-on approach has given him practical, real-life experience across many facets of asset management, allowing him to help develop solutions that actually work.
This session forms the second in a webinar series presented by MRiAM – Challenges Associated with Spares Management During the Operational Phase – Webinar Series. In 2024, MRiAM presented a webinar series on managing spares, including guidance on quantities and related considerations. Since then, several forums have raised questions and prompted discussion about how to manage spares once they have been identified in the maintenance system and warehoused during the operational phase of a project. There has also been growing interest in related topics such as managing obsolete spares, “squirrel stores”, and maintaining spares holdings. The objective of this series is to address these topics and provide practical solutions from speakers who have identified these issues and can share proven approaches. Registering for this session will register you for all four sessions in the series.
