Thank you to everyone who joined us last night for the AMCouncil Sydney Chapter’s panel on how NSW can move from reactive recovery to proactive, risk-informed resilience in asset management. A special shout-out to our Canberra Chapter, who gathered as their own hub to tune into the technical component—thank you to James Stevenson, Canberra Chapter Chair, for organising the Canberra hub.

Our sincere thanks to Dylan Buckley, Sydney Chapter Chair, and the Sydney committee—particularly Stephen Poropat and Karandeep Chandha—for their huge efforts in bringing this event together. We also acknowledge Engineers Australia as venue sponsors.

The panel explored the increasing frequency and severity of extreme weather in NSW and what it means for government-owned assets and community resilience. Insights came from:

  • Amanda Leck, Head of Adaptation, Mitigation and Reconstruction, NSW Reconstruction Authority, on the $300M+ State Disaster Mitigation Plan and tools such as LSPA and CCIRA enabling councils to prioritise resilience upgrades.
  • Suzanna Remmerswaal, Associate Director, Sustainability & Resilience, AECOM, on integrating climate-risk modelling and nature-based solutions across the asset lifecycle.
  • Michael Drayton, Market & Product Specialist, Moody’s Analytics, on catastrophe modelling and data-driven investment decisions.

We were also delighted to recognise Kevin Hang, winner of the 2025 AMC Asset Management Scholarship, whose research advances slope resilience using AI-augmented modelling and dynamic probabilistic cost-benefit analysis.

Key takeaways

  • Resilience is about protecting communities and service continuity—not just hardening assets.
  • Nature-based adaptation offers scalable, cost-effective co-benefits.
  • Transition risks must be factored into planning and investment.
  • Cross-agency and industry collaboration is essential to embed resilience.
  • Data and modelling are unlocking smarter, targeted investment pathways.
