On Thursday 6 August, AMC CEO Dr Anne Gibbs briefed members and prospective delegates on the Australia–China Asset Management Technical Study Tour, running 14–23 October 2026. If you missed the session — or want the detail in writing — this post has everything: the slides, the draft program, and how to register.

Why we’re running this

A few things brought this tour together:

  • Members asked for it. AMC members have consistently told us they want opportunities to engage directly with the international asset management community, not just read about it.
  • It’s a genuine two-way exchange. This isn’t a study tour in one direction — it sits squarely inside AMC’s Strategy28 commitment to learning with other countries, with a shared focus on new technology, digitisation and innovation. Chinese and Australian asset managers are working through many of the same problems, from workforce shortages to the shift to condition-based maintenance, and there’s real value each side can bring to the other.
  • The relationships already exist. AMC has hosted Chinese Government delegations in the past, and those contacts — along with AMC’s role convening China-based experts on ISO TC251 working groups — gave us a running start.
  • Australia is already exposed. State Grid Corporation of China already holds a 60% stake in Jemena and a 46.6% stake in ElectraNet. Understanding how the world’s largest asset owners actually run their maintenance and reliability programs isn’t academic for Australian asset managers — some of us are already downstream of it.

Dr Gibbs and Kai Dong travelled to China in July 2026 to lay the groundwork, meeting operators across ports, rail, water, telecommunications infrastructure, robotics and industrial software — the connections this program is built on.

What’s attached

Two documents from Thursday’s session are available to download:

  • Download the briefing slides — the full presentation Anne walked through, including cost, dates, inclusions and registration terms.
  • Download the draft Program — a day-by-day outline of the itinerary and the organisations we’re in discussion with, city by city.

A note on the program: it’s a working draft. Several of the organisations named are working through their own internal approval processes in China, so please treat the host list and running order as indicative, not confirmed. AMC will publish the confirmed program on or before 4 September 2026, and deposits are refundable in full up to that date.

The essentials

  • Dates: Wednesday 14 October – Friday 23 October 2026 (delegates arrive Guangzhou Tuesday 13 October). Guangzhou → Shenzhen → Shanghai → Qingdao → Beijing.
  • Cost: A$6,000 per person, in-country only — 11 nights’ accommodation, most meals, ground transport and internal travel. International airfares are booked separately (a multi-city ticket: into Guangzhou, out of Beijing).
  • Places: Capped at 12, allocated in the order deposits are received. If the 12 places are taken, register your interest anyway and email webmaster@amcouncil.com.au to go on the waiting list.
  • Deposit: A$2,000, required by 21 August 2026 to secure a place.
  • Refunds: available in full up to 4 September 2026.
  • Balance: due 11 September 2026.

This is a professional technical exchange, not a trade mission — there’s no procurement activity involved. Every host organisation is given the same technical question set in advance, so each visit produces material delegates can bring straight back to their own organisation.

There will be a second, shorter briefing session closer to departure covering practical matters — apps and payments, connectivity, packing, etiquette and what to expect day to day.
