In the lead-up to World Asset Management Day, the Asset Management Council brings news of asset management achievements from all over the world. This month we’re focussing on East Lothian, a council area in Scotland, just west of Edinburgh, and the public corporation, Scottish Water.
Castle Moffat Water Treatment Works is one of Scottish Water’s most environmentally friendly sites, able to generate more energy that it uses. The self-sufficiency is due to hydro power. A new, state-of-the-art generator and control panel was installed in May 2019, replacing the original hydro turbine which was 50 years old. Castle Moffat Water Treatment Works is the only asset owned by Scottish Water where pumped water is used to provide power; it generates 750,000 kWH per annum which can provide power for over 2000 homes. Eighty percent of generated electricity is used, with the remaining 20 percent sold back to the National Grid1.
Castle Moffat is a good example of how Scottish Water uses innovative technology to serve its customers and maximise economic advantage from assets.
