Applications of Machine Learning to BIM and Asset Management, and Embedding Sustainability into Asset Management (commences with NZ Chapter AGM)
Date: Wednesday, 9 March 2022
Time: 4pm – 6pm NZDT (commences with AGM, approx 20 mins)
Place: Online, register to be sent your link
Cost: Free for AMCouncil members
Earn: 2 CPD points
The session will commence with the AMCouncil New Zealand Chapter AGM (approximately 20 minutes), followed with two technical presentations, detailed below:
Presentation 1: Applications of Machine Learning to BIM and Asset Management
Summary: As Building Information Modeling (BIM) workflows are becoming very relevant for the different stages of the project’s lifecycle, more asset data is produced and managed across it. The information and data accumulated in BIM-based projects present an opportunity for analysis and extraction of project knowledge from the inception to the operation phase. In other industries, Machine Learning (ML) has been demonstrated to be an effective approach to automate processes and extract useful insights from different types and sources of data. The rapid development of ML applications, the growing generation of BIM-related data in projects, and the different needs for use of this data present serious challenges to adopt and effectively apply ML techniques to BIM-based projects in the Architecture, Engineering, Construction and Operations (AECO) industry. This presentation identifies and summarise common emerging areas of application and utilization of ML within the context of BIM-generated data. Moreover, it identifies research gaps and trends. Based on the observed limitations, prominent future research directions are suggested, focusing on information architecture and data, applications scalability, and human information interactions.
Speaker:
Asem Zabin, Digital Assets and Engineering Lead, GHD Digital
Presentation 2: Embedding Sustainability into Asset Management: Climate Change Risk Assessment
Summary: Sustainability is all about meeting the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. As asset managers, sustainability sits at the centre of what we do, as we seek to build sustainable practices into all stages of decision-making about services and infrastructure, from the strategy and planning stage right through to operating, maintaining, rehabilitating and decommissioning assets. While sustainability is not just about environmental drivers, climate change is one of the most significant challenges of our time. There are two main responses to climate change: mitigation and adaption. Mitigation is the process of reducing the severity of climate change by reducing emissions. Adaption is the act/process of changing to manage the actual and expected effects of climate change. We now, more than ever, need to prioritise addressing climate change within our roles as asset managers, both in terms of mitigation and adaption.
This presentation will explore how we can embed climate change adaption into our asset management approaches. A key focus will be on climate change risk assessment and its impacts on planning and decision-making. The presentation will provide case study examples of how this can be applied in practice. The presentation will also include an update on work being completed by AM Council’s Integrating Sustainability Working Group, who are working towards establishing a range of reference material and resources on “sustainability and asset management”.
Speaker:
Adele Jones, Technical Principal Asset Management, WSP
Adele is a Technical Principal of Asset Management at WSP and with an extensive career leading and delivering a diverse range of strategic planning, asset management, network management and procurement projects. She has worked in various asset management environments, including transportation, 3-waters, community facilities, recreation and aviation, in New Zealand, Malaysia and Canada. Adele’s technical skills and experience span a wide range of asset management practices covering strategic, tactical and operational asset management. While sustainability has always been a focus in Adele’s asset management approach, over the last year, she has been working with the WSP Sustainability team specifically around embedding Climate Change into asset management practices. Adele has also recently been participating in AM Council’s Integrating Sustainability Working Group, who are looking to establish a range of reference material and resources on “sustainability and asset management” to help asset managers establish and implement relevant sustainability processes into their asset management decision making.
