Renewable energy seems to be an answer to the current climate crisis. The coal-fired plants are aging and many believe they are responsible for excessive greenhouse gas emissions. However, what happens when the wind isn’t tickling the leaves on trees, or the sun isn’t shining in the sky? Reliance on intermittent energy sources is problematic, as power cannot be generated during those times of darkness or stillness.
Melbourne started it’s 2020 technical session programme by delving into the design, implementation and certification of engineering and asset management systems to ISO55001 and ISO15288, particularly for the case of Yarra Trams over their 2-year management systems journey and the next steps for them. The interactive session was presented by Dr Allen Tam, currently the Manager of Strategic Asset Management at Yarra Trams who is leading the ISO55001 certification and reliability engineering journey.

Australia is experiencing unprecendented population growth, particularly on the eastern seaboard. With this growth in our cities and rural areas, there is an need to develop our infrastructure: roads, transport, services. Certainly this is the case here in Melbourne, with level crossings at major intersections coming down before our very eyes. The completion of the Caulfield to Dandenong Level Crossing Removal (CTD) project in 2018 saw the removal of nine dangerous and frustrating level crossings with replacement skyrail. The shifting upwards of the rail lines has created open spaces and community hubs, as well as increased the flow of traffic and decreased the time and frustration in commuters along the major arterial routes.
Sydney Chapter kicked off 2020 with its Annual General Meeting at Ausgrid 24-28 Campbell St, Sydney, followed by a presentation from Martin Kerr on ISO 55010: Asset Management – Guidance on the Alignment of Financial and Non-Financial Functions in Asset Management.
We seem to live in an era of outsourcing. Anything that we no longer have the time or inclination to do, we outsource. Our home cleaning, our dinners, our grocery shopping is all examples of outsourcing and how it benefits us. But what is it teaching the younger generation about ‘elbow-grease’ work or the banalities of life? And does it give us cause to wonder about the chain of standards?
