There is often tension between various stakeholders when it comes to the cost of maintenance of physical assets. Leadership within most organisations seeks a return on investment, and many times, it can be difficult to grasp the juggle between the cost of maintaining assets and the bottom line. There can be issues between the maintenance and operations departments, often with the two working in silos and an unhealthy level of confusion about each other’s specific tasks.

A small town with a big name opened a new rail freight terminal in early December 2019. In the northern region of Victoria, Ultima, with a population of 174 at the 2016 census, has welcomed the upgrade of the Manangatang rail line.
The Qube Ultima Intermodal Terminal currently receives two trains each week, but it is expected to increase to three or four trains per week. The train service will take up to 4,000 trucks from Victorian roads each year.

The small county town of Denham, Western Australia, about 100kms from Carnarvon, looks to become a model host to a new energy solution.
Denham is home to about 700 Australians. For the past twenty years, Denham’s electricity has been sourced from a combination of diesel and wind-generated power. Horizon own and operate the diesel facility, with the wind farm owned by Synergy. Both the current assets are aging, ready for disposal.

As asset management practitioners, we use our knowledge and skills for the benefit of the community, to create solutions for a sustainable future. As a Technical Society of Engineers Australia the Asset Management Council adopts the Engineers Australia Code of Ethics as an ethical framework for members to use when exercising their judgement in the practice of asset management and as members of the Asset Management Council more broadly.
They continue to commit all members, and any non-members certified under the Asset Management Certification Scheme to demonstrating integrity, practicing competently, exercising leadership and promoting sustainability.

Today’s financial market requires businesses to improve productivity and asset performance with less resources and capital. This will come as no surprise to anyone in the business world, and it’s fair to say that this understanding is universal. The problem of implementing it as an asset management strategy is another story altogether.
Many organisations don’t associate the inability to achieve asset management goals with a clear, whole-of-business understanding of asset condition and performance. Asset management connects assets, strategies, people and information to enable a clear view of operations, maintenance, perceived risk, and future condition of physical assets.

Government departments across Australia at the local, state or federal level are faced with the complexities of when to renew assets.
Most of the public infrastructure in our nation was built in the post-WWII boom: 1950s to 1970s. With many assets having a life-cycle of between 30 – 80 years, it’s no wonder that right now, across our major cities and rural areas, we’re seeing unprecedented construction, upgrading and renewal.
