Rail Services Australia (Hunter Valley & North West) A provider of asset maintenance services to rail and other industries in NSW and South East Asia, Rail Services Australia (RSA) develops and deploys modern asset management systems and techniques to help manage rail safety and on time train running, reduce service interruptions and reduce user costs. In its work for the Rail Access Corporation in the Hunter Valley, RSA mixed standard maintenance techniques derived from the rail and road industries with more sophisticated aeronautical systems to provide an integrated asset maintenance management system. It includes the development and implementation of integrated software systems for maintenance management, a tailored technical maintenance plan and cultural change to support future asset management.
Klinge and Co Pty Ltd Brisbane-based Klinge and Co has developed and refined unique software tools to aid tyre cost management at mines. Total Tyre Control is a Windows compatible software program and a proven tyre management tool that quickly identifies the best tyre for the job, monitors day-to-day tyre maintenance, reports on tyre performance and condition, and includes accurate tyre budget forecasting. The program gives tyre users the information to provide safe, correct remedial solutions to fleet tyre problems and helps cut fleet operating budgets, in industries where the cost of tyres can be up to 10 per cent of total operating costs. Benefits include a reduction in capital for tyre purchases, increased productivity levels without tyre damage and improvements in tyre related safety levels.

Hazelwood Power has developed and implemented a maintenance plan that has lead to a greater than 20% reduction in maintenance costs, and a 37 year life expectancy increase.
Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Authority has seven power stations, one pump station, 145 km of interconnected trans-mountain tunnels and 80 km of aqueducts. The use of Reliability Centered Maintenance to systematically optimise the main hydraulic, generating and pumping plant maintenance programs has achieved significant reductions in maintenance costs and improved plant availability.
1997 Recipients
Australian Maintenance Engineering Excellence Award
TRANSFIELD Maintenance has a ten year contract for Maintenance Services of 35% or Sydney’s Arterial Road Network (which includes over 6 million sq. metres of pavement, 143 km of guardrail, 187 bridges). Maintenance management and engineering innovations have lead to a sophisticated pavement model which has reduced road degradation, and hence community costs, reduced noise
TRANSGRID manages and operates NSW’s electricity transmission network. An asset management process applied to the high voltage transmission lines and associated easements has achieved a 99.9995% reliability, in parallel with a 25% cost reduction over 3 years.
1996 Recipients
Australian Maintenance Engineering Excellence Award
City Rail (NSW) now called Rail Services Australia, manages signal, electrical and civil infrastructure assets worth over many billions of dollars throughout Australia. The development and implementation of Technical Maintenance Plans and supporting management systems has been the centrepiece in achieving many millions in savings.
Edison Mission Energy (Victoria) manages and operates a 1000 MW coal fired power station. The development of strategies has lead to the establishment of a positive maintenance culture within the organisation. This culture underpins the plant’s high level of performance.
