The Melbourne Chapter invite you to the next Technical Session:
Assessing the impacts on community of a catastrophic failure of a major hazard facility Presented by Ian Thomas, IFTA
About the presentation
Ian Thomas is the principal consultant and owner of IF Thomas & Associates. He focuses his efforts on understanding and characterising the risks attributable to major hazard facilities, where they are in close proximity to vulnerable communities.
Ian will describe a hypothetical study of the Point Gellibrand Tank Farm in the western suburbs of Melbourne. His analysis looks at the potential effects of a significant loss of containment at the tank farm. Ian will explore the impacts on the neighbouring community, as well as the facility and related services. Using CFD modelling and an assumed range of spillage rates and weather conditions, with overlays from the 2005 Buncefield (UK) explosion, Ian illustrates the need for careful consideration of community in the management of large, high risk assets.
