Those old mattresses that get placed kerbside for collection by your local council are finding a new purpose in their after-life.
Previously, the mattresses were shredded then dumped in landfill, with only the springs able to be repurposed. But now thanks to national social enterprise, Mattress Recycling Australia, all of the mattress will be recycled.
Partnering with Central Coast Council, Mattress Recycling Australia collected from the Kincumber Waste Management Facility over 2000 mattresses in a three-month period, amounting to over 1500 cubic metres saved landfill.
The overall aim of the program is to make resources from the old mattresses. The scrap metal from springs can be repurposed into the manufacture of railway wheels, while the foam inside can be transformed into products like carpet underlay, wall panels, pet bedding. The wood, floc and plastic can be processed into biofuel and be used in cement manufacturing.
The three-month trial has been hugely successful, and show that with an innovative spirit, we can all contribute to the circular economy.
