With a great portion of Australia’s population advised to #stayhome, it is an easy leap to assume our roads and major arterials, as well as public transport systems around the capital cities, are quiet.
But that doesn’t mean nothing is happening.
In Gunnedah Shire in NSW, work is continuing at a cracking pace on a second rail overpass and a roundabout. All works are being undertaken with minimum disruption due to decreased traffic in the region, but with increased awareness of guidelines surrounding health and safety of workers in light of social distancing due to coronavirus1.
And, moving closer to Sydney, the Minister for Transport, Mr Andrew Constance announced the commencement of tender process to build 50kms of railway tunnels between Parramatta and the CBD. This will have the potential to create thousands of new jobs, with the project requiring truck drivers, tunnellers, electricians, carpenters, plumbers, labourers and security guards2. With so many employees already laid off from their usual employment, this brings welcome news.
