Rami Affan provided a great presentation on Asset Management System Benefits for Industry and Government in our Sydney Chapter’s virtual technical meet last Thursday evening. An excellent summary of the Policy position and implementation requirements for NSW government agencies and a great update on where Infrastructure NSW is up to on their journey implementing consistent Asset Management Systems providing benefit for the citizens of NSW.
It’s rather obvious to state that maintenance of assets results in a greater reliability of that asset. In asset management circles, a well-oiled machine is not just a metaphor. But with large engineering assets, sometimes the reliability of your asset relies on external providers, such as OEMs, as well as your own business. What happens to your asset maintenance plan when depending on suppliers as part of reliability?

Working with data is a must. In our technical world, we can’t avoid data.
Within asset management, data can help businesses build value. This can be achieved via data mining, which is the extraction of patterns within large data sets, and as there is almost always valuable information contained in every large data set, discovering these patterns will help to inform decisions at all levels of a business. The trick lies in avoiding the pitfalls to find and use that valuable information.

The GFMAM met during the last week of June via the web during a series of late night meetings for our two delegates. Both of the AMCouncil representatives, Dave Daines and John Hardwick, attended the GFMAM online meetings from 7pm until midnight for 5 nights in a row. With renewable energy options becoming more the norm, and the brown coal-fired plants of old being disused and repurposed, it is timely to re-establish standards and protocols in systems, operation, and management. Bring in new frameworks to ensure system security and efficient capacity, and coordinate new forecasting to anticipate restraints in service and enhanced intelligence surrounding decision-making tools.
