Asset Management Body of Knowledge (AMBoK)

What is AMBoK?

The Asset Management Body of Knowledge (AMBoK) is the technical base of the Asset Management Council. A Body of Knowledge represents the sum of core information in an area of expertise. For the Asset Management Council, AMBoK is a collection of models, definitions and associated content that describes the profession of asset management. While it is important that the AMBoK is documented, it is also important that it can be communicated and applied to advance the understanding of asset management within the community.

AMBoK influences many Asset Management Council activities and ventures, as you can see by the AMBoK Governance Framework below.

University of Wollongong

Master of Engineering Asset Management Graduate Certificate in Engineering Asset Management

The University of Wollongong a unique partnership with the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO), providing students with access to experts in the field of reliability engineering and system safety as part of their study program.  These course have been developed in collaboration with key engineering asset-driven organisations and are delivered by industry experts and leading academics.

The courses have been uniquely designed for professionals to develop or enhance their skills in the strategic and tactical issues associated with the management of assets. They provide structured learning and development by taking a problem-based approach and focussing on evaluating potential solutions to challenges faced by organisations. The courses allow participants to explore the available knowledge relevant to specific issues arising in the practice of asset management.

Asset Management Council – Lecturers

James (Jim) Kennedy
Jim has a 40 year perspective on the escalating importance of maintenance engineering which began when he was in the RAAF. In 1986 he joined the Institute of Engineers National Panel on Maintenance, the forerunner of MESA, and subsequently became a founding member of MESA.
“Over the last six years Jim has trained over 500 people nationally and internationally from Group General Managers to Team Leaders in the principles and practice of asset management. A number of large utilities have achieved ed significant turnaround following the adoption of key asset management models contained in this course”.

Deryk Anderson
Deryk Anderson has over 22 years experience in the management of industrial assets as a practitioner, manager, consultant and lecturer. Originally from the power industry, he has worked in Petrochemical, Utilities, Process and Food and Beverage Industries. Deryk has been a member of MESA since its inception in 1992, and was part of the original Adelaide MESA committee. Since 1999, Deryk has lectured in asset management strategies to over 500 representatives of national and international organizations.

Peter Kohler
Peter is an engineering professional with proven ability to deliver innovative solutions in the areas of risk management, asset management and maintenance engineering. Peter’s extensive career includes being a Captain in the Royal Australian Navy. This has enhanced Peter’s expertise unlike any other. Through his naval experience he has gained first hand experience and knowledge regarding Asset Management in practice. After leaving the Navy Peter founded a new company specialising in Asset Management (Capability by Design, an engineering consultancy firm). Business has proved to be no problem for Peter, as he is currently the Managing Director of CBD. With prior experience in the industry and having been a constant and diligent member of MESA since 1993, Peter is a prominent and highly regarded figure in Australia’s Asset Management circle. This was reinforced when in 1996 he spearheaded the development of the highly prestigious AMEA (Asset Management Excellence Award). The award aims to recognise, encourage and further improve the quality of Asset Management. Peter was again recognised for his services in 2008 when he was granted a life membership to MESA and Asset Management Council.

Terry Howard

Terry has an electrical engineering background with post graduate studies in Asset Management and holds a Masters of Systems Engineering.  He has over 15 years experience in the practical application of Asset Management principles in the NSW Rail Industry.  He was key contributor to RailCorp’s success in twice winning the MESA Maintenance Excellence Award through the introduction of cultural change to maintenance practices.  He project managed the implementation of Mincom’s Ellipse system to support RailCorp’s Asset Management Strategy and the development of integrated specialist rail systems to supplement Ellipse functionality.  He is a regular lecturer for RailCorp’s internal 5 day course “Asset Management for Engineers and Managers” and is an active member of MESA’s Sydney Chapter.

Ernst Krauss

It could easily be argued that Ernst Krauss has an all round perspective on the benefits of membership of MESA. After all, he has not only been a driving force in the Society’s West Australian chapter, fulfilling many roles and responsibilities, but his achievements on behalf of his employer have been recognised by his fellow professionals. In 2001 he received an Australian Maintenance Engineering Excellence Award on behalf of Woodside Energy’s offshore operations, marking a milestone in his long career in maintenance and asset management generally and MESA specifically. Ernst has more than 30 years experience in petrochemical, mining and general industries in instrumentation and electrical engineering, both in Australia and overseas. For 10 of those years he has been specifically involved in maintenance and reliability engineering. “I joined MESA because I could see it as the professional representation of the maintenance and reliability community, as a vehicle for raising awareness of the profession including asset management activities and for engaging in activities related to the profession,” he says. Perhaps it’s the resourcefulness for which people in the west are well known or simply his personal motivation but in more than 10 years Ernst has assumed many roles and responsibilities within MESA. These include having been appointed technical director and organising the very successful ICOMS03 in Perth. Even when the pressure of business forced him to relinquish the position of technical director he chose to remain on the MESA council. As a member of the WA chapter he engages in liaison with education and training providers, assists with organisation of technical events and is part of the steering committee charged with reorganising the Society. Ernst is employed at Woodside Energy in Perth as team leader responsible for maintenance and reliability engineering. Woodside recognises the value of MESA membership for employees and is a strong supporter of MESA activities. “MESA is becoming the leading professional organisation for all aspects of asset management. It is delivering greater value to up and coming professionals and is also attracting corporate members.” The Society provides outstanding value to members by best practice forums, industry training programs, representation to government and authorities and assistance in education of future asset management professionals at all levels.
