The Newcastle Chapter in co-operation with Engineers Australia invite you to a site visit of NCIG coal terminal

To hear a presentation on Asset Management Development by Barry Arens – Technical Services Manager, on the project and inspect the facilities.

About the Site Visit

Newcastle Coal Infrastructure Group Pty Limited (NCIG) owns and operates one of Australia’s major coal export terminals with proximate rail, storage and ship loading facilities and associated infrastructure. The Terminal is located on Kooragang Island at the Port of Newcastle. The Terminal services long life coal mines in the Newcastle, Hunter Valley, Gunnedah, Gloucester and Western Coalfields of New South Wales by providing access to port infrastructure to export their coal production.

NCIG’s Terminal has been operating for over three years and was expanded to an installed capacity of 66  million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) on 30 June 2013. The Terminal forms part of the export gateway for the substantial Hunter Valley coal industry, with the Port of Newcastle representing the export route for production in the region.

Over 90% of coal exported through the NCIG Terminal is thermal coal to be supplied to established energy consumers in Asia such as Japan, South Korea and Taiwan, with significant recent and forecast growth in exports to the developing economy of China.

Barry is a mechanical engineer graduate from Sydney Uni. He commenced at PWCS undertaking a variety of engineering and maintenance roles including a 4 year period as maintenance superintendent for the Kooragang Terminal.  Moving into the Aluminium industry Barry held numerous technical and operational roles at a senior management level including a key leadership role during the viability analysis and ultimate closure process for the Kurri Kurri smelter.  Following the closure he returned to the coal port where he is currently the Technical Services Manager for NCIG.

Note that no Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is required for the site tour

The presentation will provide an overview of NCIG including its construction, operational ramp up, ownership structure and major customers.  Following this we will have a brief discussion regarding the NCIG journey to become  more aware of the step from maintenance to holistic asset management including the process of getting organisational and board of directors’ buy–in to the concept.
