From 14 to 23 October 2026, a ten-member Asset Management Council delegation led by Chair Wendy McPate held technical exchanges in Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Shanghai, Jiaxing, Qingdao and Beijing. The delegation met ten organisations spanning electricity networks, low-altitude aviation, robotics, data centres, water, smart metering and ports, as well as China’s national asset management standards body and a national industry federation. Delegates also visited rail and urban construction projects.
The delegation included CEO Dr Anne Gibbs, Immediate Past National Chair Toby Horstead (WSP), Non-Executive Director Dr Yvonne Power (IMPOWER), New Zealand Chapter Chair Dr Peter Griffiths (KiwiRail Holdings Limited), Sydney Chapter Chair Dylan Buckley (Aurecon), YAMP Chair Shuwen Ling (WSP), Operations Manager Kai Dong, Membership Coordinator Heidi Robinson, and High School Representative Xuanyu Bella Dong.
Discussions with host technical and management teams covered whole-of-life asset management, digital and AI applications, robotic and drone inspection, condition monitoring and predictive maintenance, asset management standards and professional capability. Delegates saw an automated container terminal, water facilities, a data centre campus and a smart meter calibration line. They also saw intelligent construction, building information modelling (BIM) used from design through construction to handover for operations and maintenance, and integrated planning for a new smart city. In Beijing, the delegation met the China National Institute of Standardization on applying the ISO 55000 series, and the China Federation of Industrial Economics on building asset management capability.
“China is moving beyond collecting asset data to actively using it to make decisions, predict problems, optimise operations and improve asset performance,” said Ms McPate. “We saw asset management principles being translated into real operational outcomes.”
“The core questions of asset management are shared, and Australian, New Zealand and Chinese practitioners have a great deal to learn from each other,” said Dr Gibbs. “We thank every host for their openness and generous hospitality.”
The program was organised by Kai Dong, the Council’s Operations Manager and China Liaison and Technical Exchange Lead, who secured and arranged every host visit and coordinated the delegation throughout. The Council thanks him for making the exchange possible.
The Council thanks colleagues at Austrade in Beijing and Shanghai for their help with introductions and arrangements. Insights from the exchange will be shared with members in the coming months.
