Tribology – its importance to asset managers

Presented by Dr Subhash Sharma, Head of Postgraduate Maintenance Mangement Program at CQU University, Melbourne Campus.

About the Presentation

A major challenge for asset managers is to minimise the adverse effects due to friction such as increased wear and energy consumption. Responding to that challenge can prolong the life of machine components.

Subash Sharma’s presentation introduces tribology as the science and engineering of the effects created by two rubbing surfaces. Tribology deals with friction, wear and lubrication of moving parts, and Subhash will explore how the principles can be applied at the design stage and the maintenance phase. Because maintenance is an important phase of the life cycle of a mechanical asset, knowledge of tribology can be vital role for an asset manager.

Dr Subhash Sharma is the Head of Postgraduate Maintenance Mangement Program at CQU University, Melbourne Campus. He is a mechanical engineer and obtained his PhD on bearing performance in a mining environment.

Subhash has over 30 years teaching, research and industrial consulting experience in variety of areas including tribology, maintenance management, condition monitoring and alternate fuels. Over the years he has trained hundreds of practising engineers and managers from industries in the area of tribology, maintenance engineering and management. Subhash is supervising four PhD students currently and more than a dozen postgraduate and undergraduate students projects.

Subhash has worked with Rio Tinto, Vic Energy, Queensland Rail and worked on ARC, NSF and CSIRO funded projects and has close to 50 research publications to his credit.
