From consultation with stakeholders, it has become clear that members and stakeholders of the Global Forum on Maintenance and Asset Management (GFMAM) Member Societies are seeking assistance in achieving results from the ISO 5500X Standards. In particular, organisations require competent and capable people – who may be employed as staff or brought in from external organisations – to assess against, or comply with, ISO 55001.
The Competency Specification for an ISO 55001 Asset Management System Auditor / Assessor sets out the minimum knowledge and comprehension specification for personnel to audit or assess to ISO 55001.
Each GFMAM member incorporates this Specification as part of their asset management framework.
These competency requirements have been created to form the baseline to assure the competence of people who audit or assess organisations to ISO 55001. These competency requirements conform to, at least, the requirements and recommendations in ISO 17210-5 and ISO 19011:2011.

It’s that time of year again! Here are some recently asked questions about the new renewal system.
Why is the AM Council managing its own membership renewals?
The Asset Management Council and Engineers Australia, with reluctance, made the decision that the Asset Management Council would take on the renewal process for members in the short term. This splits membership payment into two processes for those who are members of both organisations.
The new Engineers Australia portal, excellently designed for individual members, is not yet easily functional for our corporate member representatives, who represent almost half of our membership. Additional features for the EA portal are still under development, which is why we plan that the situation will revert in the future.
Is there an AM Council membership discount if I’m also an EA member?
We are still clarifying the discount that applies to the first technical society membership of EA members under this current and hopefully temporary system. We will let you know as soon as possible if the discount still is available and can be applied.

Ballarat Rail Maintenance – the challenges of a new beginning , Presented by Rod Fuller , Business Improvement Manage, UGL
UGL’s Rod Fuller will explore how asset management principles supported the challenges of a strategic relocation of UGL’s Ballarat rail business from a ‘steam train era’ workshop to a modern maintenance and manufacturing facility.
The move provided a catalyst for a review and improvement of the business operations, assets and systems, as the old site constrained efficient maintenance and manufacturing activities.
Assets that had supported the operations, the overhaul and refurbishment of rolling stock and its equipment, were critically assessed for their relevance and application to achieving the strategic business plan for the next decade. The site move had to be completed in only 6 months while maintaining continuity of the services provided to our clients.
The presentation will describe how the principles of asset management were used to balance risk, cost and benefit to address the constraints of the old site and the establishment of a world’s best practice rail equipment overhaul and refurbishment facility.
Rod Fuller is currently a Business Improvement Manager with UGL. His 40 year career includes extensive periods engaged with rolling stock engineering, contract management and commercial roles. In 2010 he ran the UGL Rail operations in Hong Kong, a business that provides rolling stock maintenance, build and refurbishment services to MTR. Rod holds a Bachelor of Engineering from the University of Melbourne and is a Member of the Institution of Engineers Australia and a Chartered Professional Engineer.
